Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

What I Built

"Because some voices deserve to live beyond a lifetime."
Every year, countless stories, recipes, life lessons, and quiet wisdom fade away when a loved one passes. Photo albums capture static faces, but they lose the laughter, cadence, inflection, and warmth of authentic voices. General-purpose cloud drives become digital graveyards of disorganized files where memories get lost.
In honor of Día de los Muertos and ancestral remembrance for the DEV Hacktoberfest "Ghost in the Machine" Challenge, I built Echoes—a sovereign, living family memory archive designed to preserve heirloom stories, spoken voices, and generational wisdom.

Echoes turns personal voice recordings, uploaded audio files, and written stories into living keepsakes with sub-second AI extraction and voice narration.

Key Features & User Flow

Technical Stack & Render Deployment

Echoes is engineered as a unified, full-stack application running 24/7 on Render:

  • Framework: Next.js 16 (App Router & Turbopack) + React 19 + TypeScript
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS v4 with custom serif typography (Cormorant Garamond & Inter)
  • Hosting & Infrastructure: Render Web Service (Node runtime, automated zero-downtime deploys from GitHub main)
  • Inference & AI: Groq LPU API (Open-Weight Qwen 27B) + ElevenLabs Text-to-Speech API
  • Data Architecture: Sovereign local atomic file store with crypto security

What I Learned

  1. Reverence Over Synthetic Chatbots: In designing for remembrance, there is a fine line between honoring someone and building an uncanny synthetic clone. Echoes deliberately focuses on preserving authentic human voices and real memories, using AI only to surface wisdom and amplify the story—never to fake an identity.
  2. Sovereignty Matters for Personal Archives: Users do not want their family recordings locked into fragile proprietary clouds. Having a self-contained, sovereign data model gives users true peace of mind.
  3. Speed Enables Intimacy: When Groq delivers AI wisdom extraction in half a second, the archive feels alive and responsive, keeping the emotional momentum unbroken.
