Build Evidence-Linked Meeting Notes from Audio with DEVUP AI and Node.js

Disclosure: I build DEVUP AI. This tutorial uses its public APIs. The bilingual transcript, timestamps, and extracted notes below are fictional fixtures, not the result of a recorded meeting or a model-quality benchmark.

A meeting summary can sound convincing and still assign work nobody accepted.

“We could redesign the dashboard” becomes “Redesign the dashboard.” A tentative date becomes a deadline. A name mentioned near a task becomes its owner.

These errors matter because meeting notes often become operational instructions.

In this tutorial, we build a different output: a draft in which every proposed decision, action, and open question carries a literal transcript quote. When the transcription response supplies timestamps, the application attaches them to the evidence. When it does not, the evidence stays untimed.

The result is a small Node.js CLI using DEVUP AI for two separate operations: speech transcription and structured extraction. It saves a review packet; it does not create tickets, send messages, or approve a decision.

For a team switching between Arabic and French, this gives the reviewer a concise English draft while preserving evidence in the language of the source. The same pattern can support product meetings, project handovers, or recorded interviews with explicit follow-up work.

What we are building

The public integration consists of a local audio file, a transcription request, an extraction request, and local validation. Nothing here depends on private platform implementation details.

Stage Output Responsibility
Speech transcription Text, plus segments when returned Recognize speech
Source normalization Stable block IDs and supplied times Preserve the evidence
Structured extraction Proposed decisions, actions, and questions Organize information
Local validation Checked fields and literal quotations Reject detectable inconsistencies
Human review Accepted, edited, or rejected notes Check meaning against the recording

That final row is part of the product design.

The useful output: a reviewable draft, not another paragraph of summary

A reviewer should be able to see what was proposed, what supports it, and what still needs a decision. Our fictional bilingual example illustrates the difference:

Source wording Proposed classification Review consequence
“Nous avons décidé de garder la version actuelle…” Decision Check that this was accepted, not quoted or contradicted later
“مريم ستراجع نسخة الهاتف قبل الخميس.” Action Preserve the literal owner and deadline phrase
“Faut-il ajouter une version arabe… ?” Open question Keep the unresolved question visible
“On pourrait refaire tout le tableau de bord…” Suggestion Do not silently promote it to assigned work

These classifications are hand-authored expectations for the fixture. They are evaluation targets for a live model, not measured results.

A quote existing in a transcript does not prove that the extracted statement follows from it. Nor does it prove that the speech recognition was correct. We will test that limitation explicitly.

1. Check the contracts before choosing models

The DEVUP AI speech-recognition documentation documents POST /v1/audio/transcriptions, a multipart request with model and file, MP3/WAV input, and a response example containing text and timed segments. Extra parameters vary by model. This guide uses the basic request only.

For extraction, the structured-output documentation describes JSON Schema requests and requires application-side validation. Select a chat model that supports the requested schema mode and output budget. We reject incomplete, refused, or malformed completions.

Choose both IDs privately from the current model catalog. For Arabic/French meetings, evaluate the actual language mix, accents, names, and recording conditions. A model accepting an audio request is not evidence of reliable Darija transcription.

This implementation has no live compatibility or recognition-quality claim. Its deterministic example and tests run without credentials.

2. Set up a small, reproducible project

Use Node.js 24. This example uses built-in fetch, FormData, Blob, and AbortSignal.timeout; it has no npm dependencies. The companion implementation was tested on Node.js v24.19.0.

Create the three source files below: core.mjs, api.mjs, and run.mjs.

Our limits are deliberately small:

Resource Tutorial policy
Local audio file Nonempty MP3/WAV, at most 20 MiB
Transcript At most 20,000 JavaScript string code units
Source segments At most 250
API response body At most 1 MiB per call
Call deadline 120 seconds for transcription; 60 for extraction
Extracted items At most 30, each with 1–5 quotes

These are application limits, not advertised DEVUP AI limits. A byte cap does not impose an audio-duration cap. Long recordings need a separate ingestion and chunking design; silently cutting the transcript could remove the sentence that changes a decision.

Prepare a recording that can actually be reviewed

Play a short section before uploading. Confirm that speech is audible, the intended language mix is present, and the recording is the one you expect. Keep an unchanged original so later citations refer to the same audio timeline.

An audio editor can help inspect a questionable passage. In the Audacity example below, one time selection is visible in both the waveform and spectrogram. These displays describe the signal; neither measures transcription confidence.

3. Preserve source text before extracting notes

Create core.mjs:

import { createHash } from 'node:crypto';

export const POLICY = Object.freeze({
  audioBytes: 20 * 1024 * 1024, responseBytes: 1024 * 1024,

The normalizer assigns IDs before the chat request. It keeps segment text unchanged and accepts overlapping time ranges. It rejects invalid timestamps and oversized input.

When timed segments are supplied, they are the source used for extraction; the top-level text is not merged into them. If there are no segments, a nonempty text response becomes one untimed block. An empty transcript is an error.

This is an intentional compromise: a text-only result can still be useful, but its evidence may cover the entire transcript. Finer untimed text chunks are a possible extension; they still cannot acquire timestamps through guessing.

Why the model never supplies timestamps

The extraction schema contains a segment ID and a quote. After validation, the application looks up the segment and attaches its times.

That avoids accepting a plausible-looking timestamp generated by the chat model. The supplied segment range is still approximate evidence location, not word-level timing and not a validated speaker identity.

Audacity label track showing a region with a start and end time and a separate point marker

Figure 2 — A region is an interval; a point is a single position. Source: Audacity Manual, Label Tracks. Our evidence uses the interval supplied with a source segment, not a timestamp generated from the extracted statement.

Why owner and dueText can be null

The extractor is allowed to leave missing information absent.

If an action has an owner or deadline phrase, our validator requires the same literal text to appear inside at least one cited quote. It preserves a phrase such as قبل الخميس rather than turning it into an invented calendar date.

This catches absent names and date phrases. It does not establish who accepted the work. A quote can contain two names, a negation, or a rejected proposal. A reviewer must resolve those meanings.

4. Make bounded requests to the public API

Create api.mjs:

import { POLICY, check, buildChatRequest } from './core.mjs';

export async function requestJson(path, key, body, {
  fetchImpl = fetch, timeoutMs = 60000, maxBytes = POLICY.responseBytes,
} = {}) {
  check(['/audio/transcriptions', '/chat/completions'].includes(path), 'INVALID_API_PATH');
  check(typeof key === 'string' && key.trim().length > 0, 'MISSING_API_KEY');
  const multipart = body instanceof FormData;
  const headers = { Authorization: `Bearer ${key}`, Accept: 'application/json' };
  if (!multipart) headers['Content-Type'] = 'application/json';
  const signal = AbortSignal.timeout(timeoutMs);
  let reader;
  let abortListener;
  try {
    const response = await fetchImpl(`https://api.devupai.com/v1${path}`, {
      method: 'POST', headers, body: multipart ? body : JSON.stringify(body),
      redirect: 'error', signal,
    });
    const rawId = response.headers.get('x-request-id');
    const requestId = rawId && /^[a-zA-Z0-9_.:-]{1,128}$/.test(rawId) ? rawId : null;
    if (!response.ok) {
      void response.body?.cancel().catch(() => {});
      const error = new Error('API_HTTP_ERROR');
      error.status = response.status;
      error.requestId = requestId;
      throw error;
    }
    check(response.body, 'EMPTY_API_RESPONSE');
    reader = response.body.getReader();
    abortListener = () => { void reader.cancel().catch(() => {}); };
    signal.addEventListener('abort', abortListener, { once: true });
    const chunks = [];
    let bytes = 0;
    while (true) {
      signal.throwIfAborted();
      const part = await reader.read();
      signal.throwIfAborted();
      if (part.done) break;
      bytes += part.value.byteLength;
      check(bytes <= maxBytes, 'API_RESPONSE_TOO_LARGE');
      chunks.push(part.value);
    }
    const joined = new Uint8Array(bytes);
    let offset = 0;
    for (const chunk of chunks) { joined.set(chunk, offset); offset += chunk.byteLength; }
    let value;
    try { value = JSON.parse(new TextDecoder('utf-8', { fatal: true }).decode(joined)); }
    catch { throw new Error('INVALID_API_JSON'); }
    return { value, requestId };
  } catch (error) {
    if (signal.aborted) throw new Error('API_TIMEOUT');
    if (error.message.startsWith('API_') || error.message === 'INVALID_API_JSON') throw error;
    throw new Error('API_NETWORK_ERROR');
  } finally {
    if (abortListener) signal.removeEventListener('abort', abortListener);
    if (reader) {
      // Cancellation is best effort; do not wait on a stalled response during cleanup.
      void reader.cancel().catch(() => {});
      reader.releaseLock();
    }
  }
}

export async function transcribe(bytes, filename, mime, key, model, options = {}) {
  check(typeof model === 'string' && model.trim().length > 0, 'MISSING_AUDIO_MODEL');
  const form = new FormData();
  form.set('model', model);
  form.set('file', new Blob([bytes], { type: mime }), filename);
  return requestJson('/audio/transcriptions', key, form, {
    timeoutMs: 120000, ...options,
  });
}

export function extract(blocks, key, model, options = {}) {
  return requestJson('/chat/completions', key, buildChatRequest(blocks, model), options);
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The transcription call uses FormData. We leave its Content-Type header unset so the runtime can generate the multipart boundary. This follows the FormData guidance.

The helper also:

  • Restricts requests to the two expected paths on the public API host.
  • Rejects redirects instead of forwarding a credential elsewhere.
  • Applies the deadline while reading the response body, not just while waiting for headers.
  • Caps response bytes before decoding JSON.
  • Returns sanitized request IDs when available and omits response bodies from errors.

There are no automatic retries. A timeout does not tell us whether a remote operation was already processed. Before adding retries, design attempt tracking, bounded backoff, and usage reconciliation; do not assume these routes provide idempotency without checking their current contract.

5. Run it on a local file

Create run.mjs:

import { open, unlink } from 'node:fs/promises';
import { extname, resolve } from 'node:path';
import { pathToFileURL } from 'node:url';
import { POLICY, check, normalizeTranscript, parseCompletion, makeReviewPacket } from './core.mjs';
import { transcribe, extract } from './api.mjs';

export async function readAudio(path) {
  const extension = extname(path).toLowerCase();
  const mime = { '.mp3': 'audio/mpeg', '.wav': 'audio/wav' }[extension];
  check(mime, 'AUDIO_EXTENSION_NOT_SUPPORTED');
  const handle = await open(path, 'r');
  try {
    const stat = await handle.stat();
    check(stat.isFile() && stat.size > 0 && stat.size <= POLICY.audioBytes,
      'AUDIO_FILE_POLICY_FAILED');
    const buffer = Buffer.alloc(stat.size);
    let offset = 0;
    while (offset < buffer.length) {
      const { bytesRead } = await handle.read(buffer, offset, buffer.length - offset, offset);
      check(bytesRead > 0, 'AUDIO_FILE_CHANGED');
      offset += bytesRead;
    }
    const probe = Buffer.alloc(1);
    const extra = await handle.read(probe, 0, 1, offset);
    check(extra.bytesRead === 0 && (await handle.stat()).size === stat.size,
      'AUDIO_FILE_CHANGED');
    return { bytes: buffer, mime, filename: `meeting${extension}` };
  } finally { await handle.close(); }
}

export async function main(args = process.argv.slice(2), env = process.env) {
  check(args.length === 2, 'USAGE_node_run.mjs_AUDIO_OUTPUT.json');
  const key = env.DEVUP_API_KEY;
  check(typeof key === 'string' && key.trim(), 'MISSING_API_KEY');
  check(env.DEVUP_AUDIO_MODEL?.trim() && env.DEVUP_CHAT_MODEL?.trim(), 'MISSING_MODEL_IDS');
  check([key, env.DEVUP_AUDIO_MODEL, env.DEVUP_CHAT_MODEL]
    .every(v => !v.startsWith('REPLACE_')), 'REPLACE_EXAMPLE_CONFIGURATION');
  const output = resolve(args[1]);
  // Reserve the destination before paid calls; never overwrite an existing report.
  const destination = await open(output, 'wx', 0o600);
  let saved = false;
  try {
    const audio = await readAudio(args[0]);
    const transcript = await transcribe(audio.bytes, audio.filename, audio.mime,
      key, env.DEVUP_AUDIO_MODEL);
    const blocks = normalizeTranscript(transcript.value);
    const completion = await extract(blocks, key, env.DEVUP_CHAT_MODEL);
    const packet = makeReviewPacket(blocks, parseCompletion(completion.value), {
      audioModel: env.DEVUP_AUDIO_MODEL, chatModel: env.DEVUP_CHAT_MODEL,
      transcriptionRequestId: transcript.requestId, extractionRequestId: completion.requestId,
    });
    await destination.writeFile(JSON.stringify(packet, null, 2) + '\n');
    saved = true;
    console.log('Draft saved. Review every item against the recording.');
  } finally {
    await destination.close();
    if (!saved) await unlink(output).catch(() => {});
  }
}

if (process.argv[1] && import.meta.url === pathToFileURL(resolve(process.argv[1])).href) {
  main().catch(error => {
    const code = /^[A-Z0-9_.]+$/.test(error.message) ? error.message : 'LOCAL_IO_ERROR';
    console.error(JSON.stringify({ code, status: error.status ?? null,
      requestId: error.requestId ?? null }));
    process.exitCode = 1;
  });
}

This reader is designed for a trusted local file. It uses an open file handle, checks size, performs a bounded read, and detects some file changes during that read. The extension check does not decode the audio or prove its content type.

The CLI reserves a new output file before the API calls. It does not overwrite a previous draft. Failed runs normally remove the unfinished file; a process crash can still leave an empty or partial file. Treat only complete, parseable review packets as results.

On systems honoring POSIX modes, the new output is created with mode 0600. Local file permissions do not replace an access-control and retention policy for a deployed service.

Create .env locally:

DEVUP_API_KEY=REPLACE_WITH_PRIVATE_API_KEY
DEVUP_AUDIO_MODEL=REPLACE_WITH_AUDIO_MODEL_ID
DEVUP_CHAT_MODEL=REPLACE_WITH_SCHEMA_CAPABLE_CHAT_MODEL_ID
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Replace all three values privately. Add .env, recordings, and review outputs to your .gitignore. Model IDs are configuration; they are not hardcoded into this article.

Then run:

node --env-file=.env run.mjs ./meeting.wav ./review-001.json
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Start with a short recording you are permitted to process. These two API requests can incur usage charges. If you rerun, use a new output filename and review the additional attempt deliberately.

6. Try the bilingual example without making API calls

Create a fixtures directory. Save this as fixtures/transcription.json:

{
  "text": "Fictional transcript fixture; no recording was transcribed.",
  "segments": [
    {"start": 0, "end": 6, "text": "Nous avons décidé de garder la version actuelle du formulaire pour le lancement."},
    {"start": 6, "end": 12, "text": "مريم ستراجع نسخة الهاتف قبل الخميس."},
    {"start": 12, "end": 18, "text": "Faut-il ajouter une version arabe de la page d'aide ? La question reste ouverte."},
    {"start": 18, "end": 24, "text": "On pourrait refaire tout le tableau de bord un jour, mais rien n'est décidé."}
  ]
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Save this as fixtures/notes.json:

{
  "items": [
    {
      "kind": "decision", "statement": "Keep the current form for launch.",
      "owner": null, "dueText": null,
      "evidence": [{"segmentId": "S0001", "quote": "Nous avons décidé de garder la version actuelle du formulaire pour le lancement."}]
    },
    {
      "kind": "action", "statement": "Review the mobile version.",
      "owner": "مريم", "dueText": "قبل الخميس",
      "evidence": [{"segmentId": "S0002", "quote": "مريم ستراجع نسخة الهاتف قبل الخميس."}]
    },
    {
      "kind": "open_question", "statement": "Should the help page have an Arabic version?",
      "owner": null, "dueText": null,
      "evidence": [{"segmentId": "S0003", "quote": "Faut-il ajouter une version arabe de la page d'aide ? La question reste ouverte."}]
    }
  ]
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Finally, create demo.mjs:

import { readFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
import { normalizeTranscript, makeReviewPacket } from './core.mjs';

const fixture = async name => JSON.parse(await readFile(
  new URL(`./fixtures/${name}.json`, import.meta.url), 'utf8'));
const blocks = normalizeTranscript(await fixture('transcription'));
const notes = await fixture('notes');
console.log(JSON.stringify(makeReviewPacket(blocks, notes, {
  mode: 'offline_fixture', generatedByModel: false, transcribedFromAudio: false,
}), null, 2));
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Run it:

node demo.mjs
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Both inputs are hand-authored fixtures. The demo performs zero transcription or generation requests. Its purpose is to make normalization, quote checking, timestamp attachment, and output structure reproducible.

The action item becomes:

{
  "kind": "action",
  "statement": "Review the mobile version.",
  "owner": "مريم",
  "dueText": "قبل الخميس",
  "evidence": [
    {
      "segmentId": "S0002",
      "quote": "مريم ستراجع نسخة الهاتف قبل الخميس.",
      "start": 6,
      "end": 12
    }
  ]
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The dashboard redesign suggestion does not become an assigned action in this fixture. On real model output, a reviewer still needs to check that classification.

The packet also includes sourceHash, which fingerprints the normalized transcript blocks. It helps identify which transcript a draft references. It does not hash the original recording, authenticate its origin, or provide a digital signature.

7. Test the failure boundary, including the one validation cannot solve

Create checks.test.mjs:

import test from 'node:test';
import assert from 'node:assert/strict';
import { normalizeTranscript, validateNotes, makeReviewPacket } from './core.mjs';

const blocks = normalizeTranscript({ text: 'Meriem will review the mobile page before Thursday.' });
const item = {
  kind: 'action', statement: 'Review the mobile page.',
  owner: 'Meriem', dueText: 'before Thursday',
  evidence: [{ segmentId: 'S0001', quote: blocks[0].text }],
};

test('text-only evidence does not acquire timestamps', () => {
  assert.equal(validateNotes({ items: [item] }, blocks)[0].evidence[0].start, null);
});

test('an invented calendar date fails the literal-evidence check', () => {
  const invented = { ...item, dueText: '2030-01-01' };
  assert.throws(() => validateNotes({ items: [invented] }, blocks), /UNSUPPORTED_ACTION_FIELD/);
});

test('a wrong statement can pass quote checks; it still requires review', () => {
  const wrong = { ...item, statement: 'Cancel the entire product launch.' };
  const packet = makeReviewPacket(blocks, { items: [wrong] });
  assert.equal(packet.items[0].statement, wrong.statement);
  assert.equal(packet.status, 'draft');
  assert.equal(packet.requiresHumanReview, true);
});
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
node --test checks.test.mjs

The third test is deliberate. The quote is real, but it does not support cancelling a launch. The validator checks structure and lexical evidence; it does not claim to verify semantic entailment.

The companion implementation was also checked with 47 deterministic offline tests covering timestamp handling, unknown fields, fabricated quotes, absent owners, invented date phrases, refusal, truncation, multipart requests, response caps, stalled-body deadlines, and output-file protection. These tests do not measure ASR accuracy or prove live prompt-injection resistance.

For real recordings, evaluate separate layers:

Layer Review question
Audio → transcript Were names, negations, numbers, and language switches recognized correctly?
Transcript → notes Does each statement actually follow from its quoted passage?
Notes → assignment Was the owner explicit, and did the person accept the work?
Notes → deadline Is the phrase unambiguous in the meeting's date and time zone?
Notes → completeness Were important decisions or unresolved questions omitted?

A result can be perfectly valid JSON and fail any of these checks.

Make the review procedure explicit

For a timed item, open the cited interval in the original recording and listen with enough surrounding context to catch a correction or a negation. Compare the audio with the transcript quote, then compare the quote with the proposed statement. If the result is untimed, use the quote to locate the passage manually; keep its timing unknown.

The table illustrates a useful review layout: keep the proposed item, source quote, and interval adjacent. A future application should add three explicit outcomes: approve, edit, or reject. The current CLI records only the draft.

Reviewer finding Appropriate outcome
Correct quote, incorrect interpretation Edit or reject the statement
Name appears, but assignment is ambiguous Keep the owner unresolved until clarified
Relative deadline lacks a clear meeting-date reference Preserve the phrase; do not create a calendar deadline
Transcript differs from the recording Correct the source through a versioned review process and rerun extraction
Important context exists outside the cited interval Extend the review context; do not treat the narrow quote as complete proof

This procedure also catches omissions: review the recording for decisions the extractor missed, rather than checking only the items it happened to return.

8. What changes before this becomes a deployed product

The CLI makes the extraction boundary visible. A public upload service needs more:

  • Controlled ingestion: authenticated users, actual audio decoding/content validation, duration limits, bounded concurrency, and permission to process recordings.
  • Recording boundaries: explicit chunking for long audio, stable recording/chunk IDs, and measured handling of decisions that cross chunk boundaries. Do not assume overlap alone solves that problem.
  • Private review: access-controlled storage, deliberate retention/deletion, redacted logs, and a player that opens the cited segment when timing exists.
  • Durable jobs: persist each processing stage and attempt ID. Avoid repeating transcription just because extraction or saving the draft failed.
  • Approval as a separate action: task creation or message delivery should consume a human-reviewed record, not raw model output.

If you later add a review interface, show the proposed statement beside its quote, with an “unknown” state for missing owner/date information. Let a reviewer edit, reject, or approve individual items. Record those edits separately from the original extraction.

The practical value is not a prettier summary. It is a shorter path from a proposed meeting note back to the words that produced it—and a clear point at which a person decides whether it should become work.
