Hi dev.to,
I'm a solo developer, and this is my first game. It's called Movetio: a free, text-based mafia game that runs in your browser. It's now in an open test until 14 November 2026, and I'd really appreciate a few more people trying it and telling me honestly what works and what doesn't.
This isn't a launch post. The game is unfinished, and that's the point of the test.
What the game is
Movetio is a classic text-based game. You pick actions, watch your numbers change, and slowly build up your position in the city. Right now you can:
- Do crimes. Crimes cost energy. You use it to earn cash and climb the ranks, and when it runs out you have to choose what to do next.
- Run smuggling routes. You move goods between Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague. Your cargo space is limited, so you have to choose which loads are worth carrying.
- Join a family. Players team up in families that share a bank, compete on a leaderboard and have their own public page.
- Plan heists. Family members plan a heist together, and each person picks a role: Muscle, Driver, Lookout or Fixer.
- Visit the casino. There's blackjack and roulette. You can own a table yourself or try to bankrupt the bank. It uses in-game money only. There's no real-money gambling.
- Watch out for PvP. Other players are your rivals, so keep your money safe.
You can play in English, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish and Spanish, in the browser on your phone or desktop.
Why Next.js and the browser
I wanted the game to be as easy as possible to try. With a browser game there's nothing to download or install and no store to go through. You open a link, and it works on both your phone and your laptop.
A text-based game also fits the web well. Most of it is pages, forms, lists and numbers, which is what the web has always done well. Next.js let me keep the pages and the game logic in one project, and as a solo developer that matters a lot. I can make a change, test it on my phone and on desktop, and ship it without juggling separate apps.
I'm still learning a lot along the way. Not every decision I made early on was the right one, and the open test is partly about finding out where that shows.
What I'd love feedback on
This is where I could really use your help. You don't need to play for hours. Even a short session gives me useful information.
- The first few minutes. Is it clear what to do when you start? Where did you get stuck or feel lost?
- Pacing and balance. Do crimes and energy feel rewarding, or grindy? Do the smuggling routes and cargo choices feel meaningful?
- Families and heists. If you play with a friend or two, does planning a heist with roles make sense? Is the shared bank clear?
- Mobile. Does everything fit on your screen? Are buttons easy to tap? Is anything slow or broken?
- Language. If you play in a language other than English, does the text read naturally? Typos and odd phrasing are very welcome reports.
- Bugs. Anything that breaks, looks wrong or behaves strangely.
You can report things with the bug report option in the game, or just leave a comment below. Honest or even harsh feedback is more useful to me than polite silence.
How to join
- Play in your browser: https://movetio.com
- Sign-up is free and needs an email account.
- The game is 18+, with one account per person.
- The open test runs until 14 November 2026.
Balance, pacing and clarity are all still being tuned, so what testers say during these weeks directly decides what I work on next.
Thanks
Building a game alone is exciting, but it's easy to lose perspective when you're the only one who has ever played it. If you have a few minutes, I'd be very grateful if you tried it and told me what you think. I'll read and answer every comment.
Thanks for reading, and maybe see you in the city.
