How JavaScript works

JavaScript is a versatile, high-level programming language primarily used for enhancing web pages, creating interactive content, and building web applications. It works in the browser environment (client-side) and can also be used server-side, notably with Node.js. Here’s an overview of how JavaScript works:

  1. JavaScript Engine

Every browser (like Chrome, Firefox, Safari) has a built-in JavaScript engine responsible for executing JavaScript code. For example, Chrome uses V8, and Firefox uses SpiderMonkey.

The engine interprets and compiles JavaScript code into machine code, which is then executed by the computer's processor.

  1. Execution Context and Call Stack

When JavaScript code is run, it creates an execution context, which is an environment where the code is evaluated and executed. There are two types: the global context (where all code initially runs) and function context (for each function call).

JavaScript is single-threaded and uses a call stack to manage the execution of functions. It follows a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) structure: the last function added is the first one removed.

  1. Memory Heap and Garbage Collection

JavaScript uses a memory heap to store data like objects and variables. When variables are no longer in use, the garbage collector frees up memory to prevent memory leaks.

Modern JavaScript engines like V8 use optimized garbage collection to manage memory efficiently.

  1. Synchronous and Asynchronous Execution

JavaScript is single-threaded, which means it processes one task at a time. However, it has mechanisms like asynchronous callbacks, promises, and async/await to handle tasks like fetching data or waiting for user actions without blocking the main thread.

Event loop and callback queue are used to manage asynchronous operations. The event loop continuously checks the call stack and callback queue, processing tasks when the stack is empty.

  1. Event Loop and Callback Queue

The event loop is central to JavaScript's asynchronous behavior. It constantly checks the call stack, and when it’s empty, it looks at the callback queue for any pending tasks.

When asynchronous functions complete (like setTimeout or network requests), their callbacks are placed in the callback queue and processed by the event loop in a non-blocking way.

  1. Web APIs

In the browser, JavaScript has access to Web APIs provided by the browser, such as DOM manipulation, setTimeout, fetch, and localStorage.

These APIs allow JavaScript to interact with the browser environment and perform various tasks, like handling user events, making HTTP requests, or storing data in the browser.

  1. Just-In-Time (JIT) Compilation

Modern engines use Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation, where JavaScript code is compiled into machine code just before execution.

JIT allows the code to run faster by optimizing it dynamically, which is essential for performance in complex applications.

JavaScript works by running in a JavaScript engine that executes code in a single-threaded manner, using an execution context and call stack. It can handle asynchronous tasks with an event loop and callback queue. With access to Web APIs, JavaScript can create interactive and responsive web applications while leveraging JIT compilation for optimized performance.
