How do you fix total station data transfer issues to a computer?

Been fighting with my total station all week and I’m losing my mind here. It just refuses to transfer data to my laptop. One day it worked fine, next day it pretends the USB cable doesn’t even exist. I’ve swapped cables, ports, even tried an old computer I dug out of a closet. Nothing. I’m out on jobs in rural areas half the time, so I really need this thing to sync without throwing a fit. If anyone’s dealt with flaky data transfers or knows what settings I might be missing, I’d love some pointers before I start yelling at inanimate objects again.
