Mouse Sensitivity Feels Different at the Same DPI? Here is Why

If you move from one mouse, mousepad, PC, or game to another and 800 DPI suddenly does not feel like 800 DPI, do not immediately chase a new sensitivity number.

Fast answer

The DPI number is only one layer. Same-DPI sensitivity can feel different because of:

  • real sensor CPI/DPI variance
  • Windows pointer speed or Enhance pointer precision
  • games using raw input differently from desktop cursor movement
  • eDPI or cm/360 mismatch
  • polling rate and wireless stability
  • mousepad friction, mouse feet, weight, grip, and lift-off distance
  • FOV, resolution, scoped sensitivity, or ADS multipliers

Start by measuring real DPI with the Mouse DPI Analyzer, then compare one setting at a time.

Measure before changing the slider

Use a controlled measurement first:

  1. Turn off pointer acceleration for the test path.
  2. Open the Mouse DPI Analyzer.
  3. Enter the DPI from your mouse profile.
  4. Move the mouse a known distance, ideally longer than one inch.
  5. Repeat the run three times.
  6. If the measured value differs, adjust in-game sensitivity with eDPI or cm/360 instead of trusting the label.

Small measurement errors happen, but if one mouse consistently measures higher or lower than the other, the same printed DPI stage is not truly identical.

Settings to check

Check the full chain:

  • Windows: pointer speed, Enhance pointer precision, active mouse app profile
  • Mouse app: DPI stage, onboard memory slot, angle snapping, lift-off distance, motion sync
  • Game: raw input, sensitivity, scoped/ADS multipliers, FOV, resolution, aspect ratio
  • Connection: polling rate, receiver position, USB hub, battery, Bluetooth versus 2.4 GHz

The important rule: change one thing, test, then move to the next thing.

When the math matches but the feel does not

If measured DPI and eDPI match but aim still feels wrong, the difference is often physical:

  • a lighter mouse starts and stops differently
  • fresh skates reduce friction
  • a faster pad lowers stopping power
  • a taller or narrower shell changes wrist and finger motion
  • lift-off distance changes resets
  • different weight balance changes flick timing

Do not keep changing sensitivity every five minutes. Give the setup one controlled practice session, then adjust only if the same over-shoot or under-shoot keeps happening.
