I gave ChatGPT, Grok and PixAI the same anime character. Here's a profile of each one.

Most comparisons of this kind run test by test: round one, here's how all three tools did, round two, here's how all three tools did. That format hides something useful. It doesn't show you what any single tool is like to work with across a full session.

So this one is organized by tool instead. Same five tests, same character, same scoring. Each tool gets its own profile covering all five rounds, then a scorecard at the end lines them up side by side. If you've searched for an ai anime generator no restrictions and want to know which one behaves the way you need it to, the tool-by-tool view answers that better than a round-by-round one does.

Disclosure: this article is a paid collaboration with PixAI. Every test was run by me, and every score is mine.

Setup, shared across all three profiles

Date: October 2026.

Tools: ChatGPT running GPT-6, Grok running Grok Imagine, and PixAI running Tsubaki.3, its anime model.

The character: Rin, an original adult woman in her late twenties, with long silver-white hair in a high ponytail tied with a red cord, amber eyes, a crimson haori jacket over black techwear, and a sheathed katana on her back.

Revision method: ChatGPT and Grok carried revisions through one running chat. PixAI used an attached reference image through its Reference Pro tool instead, since that's how its interface is built. Same request, same goal, different mechanism.

Scoring: 0 to 100 per image, judged on prompt adherence, how intact Rin's design stayed, and overall cleanliness.

Cost on PixAI: 5,500 credits for a 3:5 image, 6,300 for a 2:3 image with a reference attached.

The five rounds, run identically for all three tools:

  1. A 1990s cel-animation style test (new generation)
  2. A new pose and location, same character (in-session revision)
  3. A cold start in a fresh session with only the first image to go on (reference/upload based)
  4. An open-ended outfit change (in-session revision)
  5. A rooftop action scene, checking for over-filtering (new generation)

Profile: ChatGPT

Round 1 (style), score 81. Built the richest scene of the three, warm lantern light against a blue city. Added a courier backpack and extra armor pieces that nobody asked for, and the rendering reads as modern concept art rather than 1990s cel animation.

Round 2 (new pose), score 79. Scene and lighting look excellent, but the katana blade runs into the background with no clean endpoint, and the uninvited backpack straps came back.

Round 3 (cold start), score 85. Hair matched the uploaded reference closely, eyes read golden-amber, and the hand reaching for the vending machine makes the action easy to follow. The backpack and straps returned a third time.

Round 4 (outfit change), score 84. Picked a black strappy top, tactical trousers and chains, and draped the original crimson jacket over the shoulders so the new look still connects to the old one. Both eyes stayed open and amber, the cleanest eye match of the whole run.

Round 5 (action scene), score 85, its best round. The staff meets the katana guard with sparks at the contact point, and the police helicopter is drawn correctly. The katana reads partly like a bare blade rather than a sheathed one.

What a full session with ChatGPT looks like: detailed, cinematic, and consistently over-equipped. Three separate rounds brought back gear nobody prompted. If you're fine editing that out in a follow-up message, it's a small tax on otherwise strong scenes.

Profile: Grok

Round 1 (style), score 82. Captured Rin well, with the ponytail and red cord standing out. Style slid toward glossy modern anime, shiny highlights on jacket and hair, almost no film grain.

Round 2 (new pose), score 84. Hair, red cord and outfit all carried over. Mossy steps, cedar trees, mist and sunrise all matched the prompt. The katana rests partly behind her legs.

Round 3 (cold start), score 88, the best score of any tool in any round. Ponytail, red cord, outfit and katana all matched the uploaded reference. Snowy night, visible breath and the machine's glow on her face all present. Eyes read dark rather than amber in this lighting.

Round 4 (outfit change), score 86. Picked a metallic crop top, black skirt, chains and combat boots, kept the hair and red cord. Eyes closed mid-laugh, so no eye read on this one.

Round 5 (action scene), score 80. Rain, spotlight and skyline look cinematic, but the thief appears to leap past Rin rather than strike her, and the contact point between the weapons is unclear.

What a full session with Grok looks like: the most consistent character of the three across every round, including the cold start that matters most for reuse. The trade is a style that keeps drifting toward glossy modern anime rather than the specific retro look requested.

Profile: PixAI

Round 1 (style), score 85, its best round. Closest of the three to the 1990s look: bold outlines, flatter color areas, angular shadows, a background closer to painted anime backgrounds. All four of Rin's defining details present. Hair and lighting still carry a modern finish.

Round 2 (new pose), score 81. Best retro styling of the three rounds so far. Changed how she holds the katana, both hands across her lap rather than sheathed on her back, and turned the red cord into a looped ornament with an added orange sash.

Round 3 (cold start), score 83. Outfit, red cord, katana and amber eyes all held through the reference upload. Warm light turned the silver-white hair toward golden blonde, a meaningful miss when the whole point is character consistency. Holding a cup with a straw instead of the requested hot drink.

Round 4 (outfit change), score 82. Picked a neon-green crop top and glossy black skirt with jewelry. Amber eyes read well, though the bright green competes with the rest of the image.

Round 5 (action scene), score 77, its lowest round. Staged a more direct confrontation than Grok managed, both characters mid-air. The thief's hand on the staff is distorted, and the helicopter turned into something closer to a flying police car with rotors.

What a full session with PixAI looks like: the only one of the three with direct settings underneath the prompt box, model choice, seed, a negative prompt field, LoRAs, editing and reference tools layered on top of the chat-style request. That control is also what gets you closest to a specific era of anime rather than a generic one. The action round is where it fell behind, with the most visible object and anatomy errors of the three.

Two of the three tools share a weak spot: the action scene is where PixAI and Grok both posted their lowest round, while it's ChatGPT's strongest. That's one to watch if action content is the main thing you're generating.

What "no restrictions" breaks down into

Three different questions hide inside that one search term.

Creative control. ChatGPT and Grok work only through the chat box. PixAI adds a settings layer underneath: model, aspect ratio, batch size, seed, a negative prompt field, LoRAs, plus editing and reference tools. That's the real difference between a general chat tool and a dedicated anime generator, and it's the biggest reason anyone looking at PixAI as a ChatGPT image generator alternative would switch at all.

Usage caps. Daily limits, wait times, cost per image. PixAI runs on credits, 5,500 to 6,300 per image in this test. Check each tool's current plan before committing, since these numbers shift.

Content policy. What's allowed at all, independent of how good the tool is at drawing it. None of the three is unrestricted.

Question What the official source says Source
ChatGPT, sexual content involving minors Never allowed, bans sexualizing anyone under 18 OpenAI Usage Policies, effective October 29, 2025
ChatGPT, real people's likeness Bans using someone's likeness without consent in ways that could confuse authenticity Same source
Grok, copyright Bans violating copyright, trademark or other IP law xAI Acceptable Use Policy, effective August 14, 2026
Grok, real people Bans undressing real people or depicting their likeness in a sexual or pornographic way Same source
PixAI, age and account 18 or older, account required to generate images PixAI Terms of Service, last updated July 7, 2025
PixAI, what you post Can't infringe IP or privacy rights; explicit content must use the NSFW tag system Same source, plus PixAI's content guidelines

Checked October 10, 2026. "Fewer restrictions" mostly means more creative control. The content rules hold on every platform regardless.

Which profile fits you

Default to ChatGPT if you want a quick, detailed image and you're already using it daily. Budget one follow-up message to strip the gear it keeps adding.

Default to Grok if reusing one character across sessions matters more than matching a specific era or style. As a Grok image generator pick for that job specifically, it won every reuse-focused round in this test, cold start included.

Default to PixAI if style control is the point. It's the only one of the three with knobs to turn underneath the prompt, and it scored highest on both rounds where a specific look was the ask. Budget extra attention to hands and props in action-heavy scenes, since that's where it lost the most ground here.

Default to the official policy page, not this test, if what you need to know is whether a specific kind of content is allowed anywhere. Fifteen generated images across three tools tell you what happened with these prompts, nothing broader.

FAQ

Is PixAI completely unrestricted?
No. Its terms require an account and an age of 18 or older, ban content that infringes copyright or privacy, and require explicit content to carry the NSFW tag. The actual offer is creative control: an anime-focused model with settings the other two don't expose.

Do you need an account or credits?
On PixAI, yes, both. A single image ran 5,500 credits in this test, 6,300 with a reference attached. Check ChatGPT's and Grok's own caps directly, since those change independently of anything tested here.

Did filtering block any of the five rounds?
No, on any tool, including the rooftop fight. That's one data point about these specific prompts, not a general claim about what each service allows.

Fifteen images, five identical rounds, three different personalities. ChatGPT over-equips everything it touches. Grok holds a face the longest. PixAI gives you the most to adjust and the most that can go visibly wrong in an action scene. Run your own version of Rin on Tsubaki.3 and see which personality you end up arguing with.
