Whenever we use a website or an application, we usually focus on what we can see on the screen. We click buttons, fill out forms, and expect everything to work smoothly. But have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when you create an account, update information, or save a task?
That's something I've been exploring during my web development internship at Valentius Kryptix.
As part of my internship, I received a task related to REST API development. I saw it as a good opportunity to understand how the backend works and how applications communicate with servers to manage data.
π Understanding REST APIs
A REST API allows different applications to communicate with each other using HTTP requests.
Let's take a simple example. Imagine you're using a task management application. You want to add a new task, check your existing tasks, update a task's details, or delete one you no longer need.
The frontend sends requests to the backend, and the backend processes them and returns responses.
Here are four commonly used HTTP methods:
- GET β Retrieve information.
- POST β Create a new resource.
- PUT β Update an existing resource.
- DELETE β Remove a resource.
Understanding these methods helped me see how everyday actions in an application can be handled through API endpoints.
π οΈ Exploring a Task Management API with Node.js
My project focuses on building a Task Management API using Node.js. The idea is to manage tasks through organized API endpoints instead of handling everything directly in the user interface.
While working on this project, I started realizing that building an API involves more than just creating routes. The server also needs to validate incoming data, return meaningful responses, and handle errors properly.

Another important part is database integration. If we want task information to remain available after restarting the server, it needs to be stored persistently rather than kept only in temporary memory.
I'm maintaining my project on GitHub so I can track changes, review my code, and continue improving it as I learn more.
π‘ A Few Things I'm Learning Along the Way
1. Error handling matters
Not every request will be perfect. Someone might forget a required field or request a task that doesn't exist. The API should handle these situations properly and return a useful response instead of failing unexpectedly.
2. Testing is part of development
Tools like Postman help developers send requests to API endpoints and check the responses. Testing different scenarios makes it easier to identify problems and understand whether an endpoint behaves as expected.

3. Security shouldn't be ignored
When an application supports multiple users, each user should only be able to access information they're authorized to view or modify. This is especially important for applications that store personal task data.
These concepts might seem like small details, but together they help make an API more reliable and secure.
π― Final Thoughts
This internship task has encouraged me to look beyond frontend development and explore what happens behind the scenes. I'm beginning to understand how APIs connect different parts of an application and why proper data handling, validation, testing, and security are important.
I still have a lot to learn, especially about writing better tests, improving API security, and working on more advanced backend projects. But that's part of the processβlearning something new, trying it out, finding mistakes, and improving step by step.
I'm looking forward to applying these concepts in future projects and becoming more confident in backend development. π
One step at a time, one project at a time!
