Starting My JavaScript Journey as a Computer Science Freshman

Hello, DEV Community! 👋

I'm excited to share the beginning of a new chapter in my programming journey.

I'm a Level 100 Computer Science student at Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Ghana, and I'm now starting to learn JavaScript as I continue developing my web development skills.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to document my progress, share what I learn, and connect with other developers along the way.

From HTML & CSS to JavaScript

My journey into web development started with HTML and CSS. I've been learning through resources such as SoloLearn and practising what I've worked on through small projects.

HTML taught me how to structure web pages, while CSS helped me understand styling, layouts, colours, and spacing.

Now, I'm moving on to JavaScript because I want to understand how to make websites interactive and build more functional applications.

My current learning goals include:

  • Understanding variables, data types, and functions.
  • Learning conditions, loops, and basic problem-solving.
  • Manipulating the DOM and handling events.
  • Building interactive websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I know there's a lot to learn, but I'm ready to take it one step at a time.

Starting Computer Science at GCTU

Starting university is another important milestone for me.

I'm looking forward to strengthening my understanding of programming, algorithms, problem-solving, and the fundamentals of Computer Science.

Beyond web development, I'm interested in software engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other areas of technology.

My long-term goal is to develop the skills needed to build useful products, solve real-world problems, and turn creative ideas into practical solutions.

I understand that this will take time, consistent practice, and plenty of experimentation.

Learning in Public

One thing I want to do differently is document my journey as I learn.

Rather than waiting until I'm an experienced developer, I want to share the process itself: the concepts I learn, the projects I build, the mistakes I make, and the lessons I discover.

I believe learning in public can help me stay accountable, connect with other developers, and see how much I've improved over time.

I'm still a beginner, but I'm excited about what's ahead.

I'd love to hear from you! If you're learning JavaScript or studying Computer Science, I'd appreciate your advice:

  • What beginner projects helped you understand JavaScript?
  • What advice would you give someone just starting out?
  • How do you balance university studies with personal coding projects?

I'm looking forward to learning from this community and sharing my progress along the way.

This is the beginning of my JavaScript journey, and I'm excited to see where it takes me! 🚀

Thanks for reading!
