Your AI Assistant Can Now Work Inside Your Email Platform. Should You Let It?

A quiet change happened in email marketing this year. The AI stopped living only inside the email tool.

For years, "AI email marketing" meant a writing button in the campaign editor. You typed a prompt, it gave you a subject line and a draft. That still exists, and for plenty of people it is the right setup.

But a second model has shown up. A growing number of email platforms now expose an MCP server, a standard connection that lets an assistant like Claude or ChatGPT read your account and act inside it. Your assistant can pull last month's campaign results, spot where people drop out of an automation, build a segment from a plain-English request, and save a drafted newsletter for you to review.

Two camps, two kinds of user

AI in the editor suits people who do not already have an assistant open all day. The writing help is right where you build the email, there is nothing to connect, and the tool's AI already knows your templates.

Your assistant inside the account suits people who already think out loud with one AI across the whole business. The same assistant that helped plan the launch can now draft the launch email, check open rates, and suggest who to send the follow-up to. One brain, many tools.

Neither is better in general. The question is which one matches how you already work.

What to check before you connect anything
Which plan includes the connection. Some platforms put it on every plan, including free. Others reserve it for paid tiers.
Whether it can send on its own. The careful implementations only create drafts and leave sending to you. That is the behavior you want.
What it can change. Read-only reporting is low risk. Editing live automations is not. Look for confirmation steps on anything destructive.
Roles and permissions. The assistant should act with your user role, not as a super admin.
The bigger point

Free plans got smaller this year, which pushes small businesses to pick more carefully. But the more interesting shift is architectural: the email tool becomes the system of record, and the assistant becomes the operator. If you already rely on an AI assistant, that is worth weighing as heavily as price.

We researched and evaluated the current field for solo operators and small teams, including which tools write in the editor and which connect to your assistant, in our Q4 guide to AI email marketing tools.
