How to Get Your Website Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews: AEO and GEO Basics

More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews instead of scrolling ten blue links. If your site is not built to be understood and quoted by these tools, you can lose visits even when you still rank. Here is a short developer checklist for AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization).

SEO vs AEO vs GEO in one minute

SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO helps your pages give short, direct answers that assistants can quote. GEO helps AI tools trust and cite your brand. They share the same foundation: clear content, clean code and consistent facts.

1. Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt and your firewall. If you block search and AI crawlers by accident, your pages cannot be read or cited. Decide on purpose which bots you allow.

2. Answer the question first

Put a direct answer in the first two sentences under each heading, then add detail. Use real questions as headings, such as "How much does a business website cost?"

3. Add structured data

Use JSON-LD for Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage and Article where they fit. The markup must match what is visible on the page.

4. Keep your business facts consistent

Use the same name, address, phone number and service descriptions on your site, Google Business Profile and directories. Consistent facts make it easier for AI tools to trust you.

5. Keep pages fast and crawlable

Serve real HTML for key content, compress images and avoid hiding important text behind scripts that bots may not run.
