5 Signs Your AI Workflow Needs a Circuit Breaker (Before It Costs You)

In distributed systems, a circuit breaker stops cascading failures by cutting off a broken dependency before it takes down everything else. Your AI workflow needs the same thing.

Here are five signs you're missing one — and what to do about each.

1. You're Retrying Failed Prompts Without Changing Anything

The model returns garbage. You hit "regenerate." Same garbage. You try again. Same thing.

The circuit breaker: After 2 failed attempts with the same prompt, stop and change your approach. Don't retry — rewrite.

If you hit the limit, git stash, step back, and reassess. The sunk cost fallacy hits harder in AI sessions because each "one more try" feels free.

5. Your Prompts Have Grown to 500+ Words and You Can't Explain Why

The prompt started as 3 lines. Now it's a wall of exceptions, edge cases, and "but also don't do X." Every time the output is wrong, you add another clause.

The circuit breaker: If a prompt exceeds 200 words, decompose it. Split into:

  1. A system prompt (stable context)
  2. A task prompt (what to do now)
  3. A constraints file (rules, referenced separately)
