Chat Control 2.0 Will Kill Encrypted Messaging
Chat Control 1.0 passed on july 9. but thats just the warmup.
Chat Control 2.0 is the permanent regulation. and its going to be much worse.
what 1.0 does
lets platforms voluntarily scan unencrypted messages. bad, but survivable. you can switch to Signal and avoid it.
what 2.0 will do
requires scanning even on end-to-end encrypted platforms. this means:
- Signal would have to build in a backdoor
- or Signal would leave the EU
- or your device itself gets compromised (client-side scanning)
the technical reality
you cant have true encryption AND scanning. they are mathematically incompatible. either your messages are encrypted (private) or they are scanned (not private). there is no middle ground.
what you can do right now
- switch to Signal today (while it still works in the EU)
- use Session for sensitive conversations (no phone number required)
- use local AI tools instead of cloud AI for sensitive topics
- encrypt everything you can
- contact your MEP about Chat Control 2.0
the bigger picture
Chat Control isnt just about messaging. its about setting the precedent that the EU can scan anything. today its messages. tomorrow its AI prompts. then its search history.
if you care about privacy, now is the time to act. not after 2.0 passes.
