- Take five deep breaths with a focus on the exhale
- Write one sentence about how you feel
These are small enough to not trigger overwhelm, but structured enough to give the ADHD brain a sense of completion (and a small dopamine hit).
3. Body-based engagement
When your brain won't engage, your body can:
- Cold water on your face (activates the dive reflex, resets the nervous system)
- A short walk outside (movement + novelty + light)
- Pushing against a wall (proprioceptive input)
- Humming or singing (vagus nerve stimulation)
4. Interest-based engagement (not obligation)
Do something interesting, not something you "should" do:
- Watch a documentary on a topic you're curious about
- Take apart something and put it back together
- Draw, doodle, or make something with your hands
- Go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole (time-boxed)
The goal isn't productivity. It's giving your brain the stimulation it needs to recover.
The trap to avoid: dopamine chasing
The risk with understimulation burnout is that you swing from "doing nothing" to "doing everything" — starting three new projects, buying new tools, planning a life overhaul. This is a dopamine chase, and it'll crash in 2-3 days, leaving you more burned out than before.
