I spent 3 months building a GEO tool. Here's what I learned about how AI actually picks brands.
I'm a solo founder. I built GEOmind (geomind.app) because I was frustrated with the GEO tools available — they all tell you "you're losing in AI search" and charge $300/month for that privilege.
None of them tell you HOW to win. So I built the tools that do.
Here's what I shipped this week and what I learned about how AI models actually decide which brands to recommend.
The uncomfortable truth about AI recommendations
I built a feature called Conversational Resilience Testing. It simulates a multi-turn buying conversation — a stubborn shopper vs an AI recommender — and measures how hard the AI fights for your brand.
What I found surprised me: AI models don't recommend brands based on quality or popularity. They recommend brands based on how their website content is structured. Specifically:
Authority signals matter more than you think. Words like "trusted," "certified," "#1 rated" in your page copy directly influence AI recommendations. One client had zero authority signals while their competitor had 12. The AI never once recommended them.
Comparison language is king. If your site has a page saying "Brand X vs Brand Y" — AI models will cite you when someone asks that exact question. Without it, you're invisible to comparison queries.
Images are a blind spot. I scanned Nike.com and they scored a D (38/100) on Visual GEO — our image-specific audit. Their product images have garbage alt-text like "shoe-1.jpg." AI vision models can't see them. Nobody in the GEO space even checks images.
AI hallucinations about your brand are a real problem. I built Hallucination Defense to probe what AI says about brands under pressure ("What are common complaints about [brand]?"). In testing, AI confidently made up return policies, pricing, and product features for real brands. If you don't publish structured FAQ content, AI will fill in the blanks — and get it wrong.

LLM Intercept — Compares your site vs a competitor on 6 AI-friendliness signals (authority, specificity, comparison language, FAQ coverage, schema, freshness). Tells you the EXACT text to add to beat them.
Conversational Resilience Testing — World's first multi-agent brand advocacy simulation. Simulates a skeptical buyer debating with AI about your brand. Outputs a resilience score (0-100) with specific fixes.
Shopify Auto-Injector — One-click: fixes all product alt-texts and injects FAQ schema directly into Shopify stores via Admin API. Zero technical work for the merchant.

I looked at every competitor:
- AthenaHQ: $295/month
- Profound: $99-$499/month
- Otterly: $29/month
GEOmind uses credits. Free tier gets 50 credits. Starter is $9/month for 500 credits. Each scan costs 5-25 credits depending on the feature.
That makes it 4-8x cheaper than AthenaHQ per query.
