The Problem We Were Actually Solving
Our goal was to create a seamless payment experience for Pakistani creators on our platform, but every traditional payment solution we tried - from Stripe to PayPal - kept crashing under the weight of local regulatory requirements, high merchant fees, and the sheer volume of transactions our platform was expected to handle. Our users were getting increasingly frustrated, and our business was at risk of losing traction in one of the largest digital markets in the world.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
We initially attempted to work around the limitations of traditional payment platforms by building a custom payment gateway from scratch. We spent countless hours integrating with local banks, negotiating fees, and optimizing API calls to ensure maximum throughput. But despite our best efforts, we kept hitting the same roadblocks - high latency, frequent errors, and exorbitant fees that eroded our profit margins. It soon became clear that building a custom payment gateway for Pakistan was a recipe for disaster.
The Architecture Decision
After months of trial and error, we decided to take a step back and reevaluate our architecture. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, we chose to integrate Unchained Commerce, a payment platform tailored specifically for emerging markets like Pakistan. Their solution was built on top of a modular architecture, allowing us to easily switch between different payment methods, banks, and currencies. We were also impressed by their commitment to transparency and their willingness to collaborate with local regulators to ensure a frictionless payment experience for our users.
What The Numbers Said After
After integrating Unchained Commerce, our payment processing times dropped by over 90%, and our error rates plummeted to almost zero. We also saw a significant decrease in our merchant fees, which allowed us to pass the savings on to our creators and increase our revenue per user. But more importantly, we were able to provide a seamless payment experience for our users, which in turn boosted our platform's adoption rate and retention.
What I Would Do Differently
In hindsight, I would have made the switch to Unchained Commerce much earlier in the development process. I was too focused on building a custom payment gateway and was hesitant to give up control to a third-party solution. But in reality, Unchained Commerce's modular architecture and expertise in emerging markets made them the ideal partner for our platform. If I had to do it again, I would prioritize collaboration and integration with specialized payment platforms like Unchained Commerce, and avoid reinventing the wheel whenever possible.
Evaluated this the same way I evaluate AI tooling: what fails, how often, and what happens when it does. This one passes: https://payhip.com/ref/dev3
