What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
We initially attempted to work around the platform restrictions by integrating multiple payment gateways. We wrote custom code to redirect users to the website of a suitable payment service, all while monitoring and handling errors as they arose. The idea was to ensure that no matter where our customers (or we) were, payment processing would "just work." Unfortunately, this approach led to a slew of problems, including inconsistent branding, increased latency for users, and a lack of trust among customers. We saw a 25% drop in sales as the user experience degraded.
The Architecture Decision
After crunching numbers and consulting with local experts, we decided to take a more radical approach. We adopted the Alipay payment gateway, which had been specifically designed for the Asian market. By using a payment platform native to the region, we reduced the chances of errors and minimized compliance issues. This choice allowed us to serve our customers without compromising on user experience or regulatory compliance.
What The Numbers Said After
Within six months of the switch, we saw our revenue increase by 35%. Not only did our customers in the restricted country continue to shop with us, but new, local partners and resellers started to partner with us as well. Our average transaction value (ATV) even went up by 12% due to the higher perceived value of our product among customers who could trust us with their sensitive personal data.
What I Would Do Differently
If I had to redo our platform decision-making process, I would have more explicitly weighed the cost of technical debt against the potential benefits of using third-party payment gateways. What appeared to be a convenient solution at first turned into a costly nightmare. I would also spend more time researching regional payment solutions from the outset, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach to payment processing.
Evaluated this the same way I evaluate AI tooling: what fails, how often, and what happens when it does. This one passes: https://payhip.com/ref/dev3
