Search algorithms are a fundamental concept in artificial intelligence. In this course we studied how algorithms explore a problem space to reach a goal efficiently. Recently, I examined two works that approach search from different perspectives. One focuses on improving the A* search algorithm used in robotics and path planning, while the other explores LLM-based deep search agents that can autonomously gather information from the web. Both demonstrate how search techniques are evolving in modern AI.
Improving the A* Algorithm for Path Planning
The A* algorithm is one of the most widely used heuristic search algorithms. It evaluates nodes using the function:

where g(n) represents the cost from the start node and h(n) estimates the remaining distance to the goal. In our course, we learned that the quality of the heuristic function strongly affects search efficiency.
The research paper proposes several improvements to the traditional A* algorithm to make path planning more efficient and practical for real-world navigation systems. One key improvement is the use of adaptive weighting in the heuristic function, which allows the algorithm to dynamically adjust its search behavior. This helps reduce unnecessary node exploration and improves computational efficiency.
Another change is the introduction of a five-direction search strategy, which limits how neighboring nodes are explored in grid environments. By restricting expansions and focusing on more promising directions, the algorithm reduces redundant searches.
The paper also introduces a reward mechanism in the cost function to encourage smoother paths. Traditional A* can produce paths with unnecessary turns, so the improved algorithm removes redundant nodes and applies path-smoothing techniques. Experimental results show that these changes reduce the number of explored nodes and improve path quality.
From a course perspective, this paper demonstrates how modifying heuristics and search strategies can significantly improve classical algorithms like A*.
LLM-Based Deep Search Agents
The second article focuses on a newer concept: deep search agents powered by large language models (LLMs). Unlike traditional search engines that return lists of links, deep search agents actively plan and perform multi-step searches to gather information.
These systems function similarly to goal-based intelligent agents, which we discussed in class. Given a user query, the agent generates search queries, retrieves information from external tools, analyzes results, and decides whether further searches are needed.
Technically, these agents involve several components: a planning module that generates search strategies, retrieval tools that collect information, and a reasoning module that evaluates results. The process repeats until the agent gathers enough information to answer the query.
However, the survey also highlights challenges such as hallucinated information, high computational cost, and difficulties in evaluating multi-step reasoning. These issues show that while deep search agents are promising, they are still an active area of research.
Reflection on Using NotebookLM
While studying these papers, I compared reading them directly with using NotebookLM to analyze them. NotebookLM was helpful for quickly identifying the key contributions and summarizing the main ideas. It made it easier to understand the overall structure of each paper.
However, relying only on AI-generated summaries can sometimes miss technical details. For example, understanding the improvements to the A* algorithm required carefully reading the methodology section.
Overall, I found that AI tools like NotebookLM are useful for initial comprehension, but manual reading is still important for fully understanding the technical aspects of research papers.
