HAPPY Friday!!!
As I am here, dreaming about my first DEV job, I felt like asking you:
What's something funny that you did or happened to you abou...
For further actions, you may consider blocking this person and/or reporting abuse
I was broke and looked pretty disheveled when I got my first dev job and when I showed up on my first day somebody called security on me while I was waiting in the lobby 😐
LOL that was Savage, sorry Ben 😅 hope it makes you laugh now 😂
LOL.
Someone came to visit offices, as CEO wasn't there I made the visit
Turned out he was an FBI agent investigating on the company :/
We had a similar issue in my office not quite long. Though I was not the contact person, seriously I know how this looks like
Wow! That IS heavy 😅
I've been in the company for a couple of weeks and two people were working on a piece of software. The two people where a mid level developer (MLD) and a working student (WS). Following conversation happened.
MLD: Hey, I reviewed your code.
WS: Ok.
MLD: Seems fine as far as I can tell, but you did not stick to our coding guidelines
WSD in a very serious voice: I am the coding guideline.
This was not a joke. He meant it and that was the end of the discussion.
What I didn't know, MLD has been there for a couple of months only, whereas WS was kind of on board from the start and was in fact the better programmer. Not knowing this the whole situation was quite bizarre.
Lol, that's soooo annoying!!! Can't imagine myself being in that situation!
😂😂😂 I can imagine your confusion
I didn't know I was actually hired as a dev.
About 10 years ago I had originally applied for a graphic design position. During the interview it came up that I built my website. So for the second interview I met with the dev lead and got the job. But I wasn't fully aware that the second interview was for an entirely different department and position.
It all clicked in the first few on-boarding meetings, I didn't want to let on I really had no clue what I was doing, so I started winging it.
And I guess you could say I've been winging it ever since. I'm now the lead dev for a different agency.
You and me both.
I was studying advertising, thought I would start with a very simple design position, (this was back in Guatemala... ) 10 or so years later here I am working as a Dev in the Netherlands
Lol that is awesome 😂😂😂😂
I had to do a test with a couple of technical questions to estimate how my skills were and some general knowledge questions.
I was so nervous that I somehow managed to get the technical questions right and failed at the most basic question about how many states Germany had that time and what the names were... 😂
After the interviewer reviewed my answers, he was a bit confused, asked me this question, I answered correctly and told him I had a mind block on that question during the test.
(Got the job) and we laughed about it.
😂😂😂 hey, at least you got the job!!!!
True 😊
When I got my computer there was a sticky note on it that read "For Sale" & I was like good because it was an older MacBook pro but it turned out that the laptop was for me! The name that was given to the IT department to create all my accounts was "Sale Hernandez". 😭 Once they realized their mistake they had to recreate all my accounts. To this day I can't unsee my name when I see "Sale". 🙃
Lol that IS terrible.
But also funny 😂
hehehe if the IT was anything like ours... gouh It might had not been a mistake :D
I got my first job by showing off a 3D rainbow dinosaur model done in WebGL🕺
Lol I would have hired you after that too !!
On my last day at this startup:
After working 11+ hr days for the last 2 months, I had just run a db migration via postman a few days prior but left the tabs open :)
While showing a new guy my common-use postman routes, I accidentally hit “enter” and dropped part of the db cache :D
Good thing I had the resync routes in the next tab, good thing it was a Friday at 7pm, and good thing it was my last day LOL byyyeee
Woooooow 😂😂😂😂 great away to leave 😂😂😂
the best thing was it was your last day
I was working one afternoon when I heard a couple of fart noises coming from a set of speakers in a desk nearby, it kept happening and happening... I was confused and somewhat entertained by it, I then realized the speakers were attached to a Raspberry pi and my boss subtlety laughing at the back of the office.
We then made a clock than farted the hour xD xD
(yup, it was a startup)
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 omg a farting clock , lol lol lol
My first job as a developer instead of a sysadmin (which is actually my current job) finally made me seriously consider getting a Mac despite my significant dislike of Apple (not fond of macOS, and I like hardware I can repair myself without needing electrical engineering skills).
The funny part about this is that I don't technically need a Mac for work, I just finally got tired of pestering my colleagues (all of whom are in different timezones than me) whenever I need to test some code on macOS.
in that time hackintosh was not a thing yet? or it was not possible to do it in your conditions?
Actually, this is essentially right now, so yes, Hackintosh is technically a thing.
I dismissed a Hackintosh as an option for two reasons:
From a quick look on the US Amazon, here's what ~$800 can get you:
Board *reportedly works fine with hackintosh.
More powerful and almost just as small form factor :)

I feel you, not an Apple fan either 😅 but sometimes it helps to test !
I was hire for Motion graphics, and they say in some cases I will throw some html and css in the project.
now I'm the Lead front-end developer of our own templeate engine.
No more 3d graphics in Cinema4d or AE motion graphics for me this days, only code code and more code.
I'm the todologo in the company (front-dev && Motion graphics) 🐒
By the way my job is not that hot at all I build, design and make animated videos for online Courses about Security awarness on the internet, GDPR, HR and other things for the Seniors and not tech people.
Wow it sounds like you do A LOT of different things!
And it does sound cool 😎
yes the problem is that I can not fully master one.
Soo much to learn 😭
yes but is fun,I love the feeling when finaly you make the screen to output whatever you where looking to display at that time! I doesn't mader if is code, video, render, illustartion when you make that breakthrough, you get hook with that sensation
😍
Yes, you are not the only one who can't master everything :) same happens to me in my company, I try to lead, but have to be reading ALL the time! And I love to write code, but at this time I have to stop coding, do more code review and read more, that's it, you can't be a Team Leader and be a Developer at the same time, or you lose time to guide your Team. But of course that's how I see it.
I had was sent to the client offices (Big International Corp S.A.) and there was I with my almost 18 years and my wore out jean jacket looking at suited business people going in and out while I was waiting for the IT guy to receive me feeling like I should've thought my look a little bit more before going.
Suddenly I see a guy with a white T-shirt, wore out jeans and I knew he was the one I was waiting for.
Awwww that is a great story!!!!
I was a student and at a local student party on my first year of studying. There was some guy who heard I were talking about programming. He came up to me and asked if I knew any PHP, to which I honestly answerred that yeah it's my favorite language. I got hired to the company next week with a title "web developer". I never wrote a line of PHP, but went to clients to install this POS software and taught them how to use it. I quit after a couple of years for them not letting me develop the e-commerce plugin (that was made in PHP) of the POS system.
Lol people that don't know why they are hiring people 🙄
In a one of the interviews at a company, the interviewer asked do you know anything about this company ? I confidently said yes and started explaining, and after 5 mins into it he cut me to say- what you are explaining is entirely different company (I got confused between the names of the companies).
Oh noo!!! How embarasing at the time😅 hope it makes you laugh now !!!
I used .length function in c interview 😂
Force of habit, we can't escape
😂😂😂😂 ops
First professional website gig, sales guy wants to know what to do next for his client.
"We need pictures," I told him.
"How should I send those?"
"Just put some pictures into a folder and send it to me."
A couple of days later I got a manila folder full of catalog cut out pictures that all fell out when I opened the envelope. Not what I expected, but I'm pretty sure that site got done eventually.
HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH omg this is soo funny
I dropped half of the QA db. They called me bobby tables for a while. Lucky it was QA honestly
😂
When I started my first DEV job, I really did not like programming or coding.
My friend said that his company was hiring some junior web developer, and he thought I could pass.
My test was completed with a lot of help from my friends ( 90 % 😅 ).
I was also naive at that time. My expected salary was only about 250$ when the manager asked me.
And now, this job is my second life. It helps me have enough money to take care of my family. And it opens a new future with my family in Japan.
Awesome !!!
Oh Japan is my dream country bro visit!
Hope you and your family are having a good life
Thanks, Pachi.
Have a good day !!
My first job was with a business who's whole model was based on referrals. The app I was working on was for reps to submit their referrals.
As you can imagine, the main table in the database was the referrals table. It had almost a million rows and every other table had a referral ID column to join it.
The table was spelled
referalls
.What's worse, it was such an old legacy app, it was written before ORMs were popular, so all the DB queries were in the actual code, so references to the table were EVERYWHERE!
There was also no uniform way to spell the Referral ID columns. Some tables had them as
referral_id
and others asreferall_id
.It was a mess!
Lol lol lol
That's the funny one! I won't tell you the scary one about how they stored their passwords in plaintext. And how despite me issuing a number of fixes, they still didn't fix it as of the day I left 10 months later...
Wait what??? That IS scary o.o
i got fired because they calculated how long we had been married after i said im having a son. They came to the conclusion that we had sex before marriage
Wait... Whaaaaaaaaat
? Lol I am half laughing half crying here
real story
I sent an email and one day later, I had an interview with the founder of the company. I should built an simple guestbook and I got the job. Today, I'm still there... It's 12 years ago.
At the end of the last year, I decided to leave the company. It wasn't easy for me but I think after such a long time I want to see something else.
Wow 12 years? That is awesome!!!
It's a long time. I was the third employee and today the company has 50 people. A lot of people came and go in this time.
My first dev job wasn't even a dev job. I was a hobby programmer since aged 11, and I got a job in a computer centre in my mid-20's. With 3 other folk we were looking after the mainframes, networks & installing these new fangled PC things ;) The boss was discussing a new software they were looking to purchase & I said we could do it in the department. One of my colleagues was also a keen programmer. My boss pitched it to his boss and, well, we ended up writing it :-)
That is Soo cool!!!
A great first not dev dev job lol
I got my first dev job after admitting that I had never used the language before and knew nothing about it. I was going to be the only dev in the organization and they would eventually hire a large team around me.
Same for me 😎
Future Chef: „We are using C++“
Me: „Never used it, but programming is more [...] the rest is just Syntax“.
Got the job, learned a LOT (not only Syntax), had a lot of fun, but had to follow the love of my life and left a year later.
Wow that is cool!
Hey idk it, but plz hire me 😂😂
We used outlook tasks, and the company owner would create tasks and assign them to his employees every morning. One day my tasks were:
I moved on fairly rapidly.
What? Lol
Did he even known why he hired you?
Glad you moved in quickly
In the first place I worked, there was a nice coffee table which, except coffee, also had something like Nesquik cocoa powder. I loved it and used to drink it instead of coffee when thinking.
Once I was sitting at my place behind an amazing huge new white 19” LCD screen (long ago it was), made a good sip of this great cocoa drink, but - it went into a wrong place. After few minutes I still could not stop coughing, partially because my place looked gorgeous now, and laugh was going out of me uncontrollably. Everything around, including the beautiful new monitor, was covered in this magic drink.
Drops were still there even when I left the company about a year later: nor me this day, not even the cleaner were able to wipe them.
Wow lol what a drink lol
My first job location was in a duplex. The business was on one side and the owner lived on the other. He would often come over in just his boxer briefs immediately after waking up.
lol lol what a comfortable guy
I was a Psychology student and was looking for a summer job...
I wandered by the college job board and saw they were looking for a second year CS student...
I told myself "I can program, I know some basic Turbo Pascal" so I applied for the job...
I was the ONLY one to apply so I got the job!
Never went back to Psychology after that.
Switched degrees and 30 years later I am still happily coding away :)
All I remember is my old boss playing entire experimental jazz albums at very high volume, poking the ire of nearby offices, and adding “challenge” to work.
Lol How were you supposed to concentrate at all? Lol
I completed my higher diploma in software engineering course in 1996 and landed a data entry job in a forex investment company, taking calls for stock quotes.
Duh!!! Then I quit after a month to get out of the cell.
And yet, I am learning Dev!!!
Hope you find a better job after !!!
OMG you brought me back. In my first startup, our DBA would shout "BREAK OUT THE DEPENDS" whenever he made a change to the database. I worked with a pack of savages, it was glorious.
Lol lol lol
That sounds awesome!!!
I was so broke, had dreadlocks and the company policy was against that so I had to do my hair by myself, looked like a homeless person at a corporate office 😅😅😅😅
Damm those silly policies 😂 I bet people noticed you ,😂😂
People did notice and they still make fun of me since then 😅😅😅
My first job as a C++ dev saw me write 6 lines of C++ and made me become a devops engineer because they didn’t realise that’s what they actually wanted
😂😂😂 we are not sure what we want but you are hired lol
First job, client asked me to create a SQL script of usernames and passwords for their users. I created but I swapped the username and password columns :faceplam:
ooops lol
I had no idea about React, I've been studying it for 1 month non stop, and then, first day my boss asked me if I could program in python, scraping porn.
FML hahah, anyway I really learned a lot.
Lol lol lol
Seriously, I guess we never stopped learning 😂🤷
Mu first projects was a website and maded with and flash
Flash brings back memories 😂
Lol several times 😂 oooooooopsie
