A standard carton sealer puts one strip of tape along the centre seam on top and one on the bottom. For most domestic shipments that is enough. For heavy, valuable or export cartons that travel by sea or on long road hauls, many shippers add tape along the edges too. The result looks like the letter H, which is why it is called an H-seal.
Why the edges matter
On a heavy carton, the flap edges take a lot of the stress when the box is lifted, stacked or dropped. Taping only the centre seam leaves the ends of the flaps free to lift. Edge tape holds them down and keeps dust and moisture out of the joints.
Doing it by hand vs by machine
H-sealing by hand means three strips on top and three underneath for every box, which is slow and rarely straight. An edge sealer does the edges in the same pass as the centre seam.

Do you need one?
If your cartons are light and stay within the country, a semi automatic top and bottom sealer is the sensible choice. If you export, ship heavy goods, or have had complaints about boxes opening in transit, an edge sealer is worth a look.
