If you have watched a random size carton sealer run, it can look like magic: boxes of different sizes go in one after another, and each one comes out taped without anyone touching a knob. Here is what actually happens inside, using our PackForge 102TR as the example.
Step 1: The box enters with flaps closed
The operator folds the top flaps and pushes the carton onto the infeed. Nothing has been set for its size yet.
Step 2: The machine closes in on the box
Pneumatic side guides move in until they touch the carton, which sets the width. At the same time the top head comes down until it rests on the closed flaps, which sets the height. Because both moves are driven by compressed air, they adapt to whatever box is in front of them.
Step 3: Drive belts pull it through
Once the box is held, the drive belts grip it and carry it forward through the machine.
Step 4: Tape on, tape cut
As the leading face meets the top and bottom tape heads, the tape sticks to it, rolls along the top and bottom seams as the carton moves, and a blade cuts it at the trailing face. A roller presses the tail down.
Step 5: Reset for the next carton
When the box exits, the guides and top head open up again and wait for the next size.

When it is worth it
If your line packs one or two box sizes, a fixed size semi automatic sealer is cheaper and simpler. A random sealer pays off when sizes change all day, as in e-commerce and 3PL fulfilment.
