I built an AI assistant to help developers understand GitHub codebases
When I join an unfamiliar project, I often spend a lot of time searching through files just to understand how things fit together. I wanted to build a tool that could make exploring a codebase easier.
So I built CodeRAG Assistant.
What it does
CodeRAG Assistant lets you:
- Index a GitHub repository and search its code by meaning or keywords.
- Ask questions about the codebase in plain English.
- See relevant source files alongside answers, so you can verify the context.
- Generate an architecture and onboarding report for a public repository.
What I learned
Building this taught me that answering a question is only part of the experience. It also matters to show where the answer came from, make repository setup straightforward, and handle the small-screen experience carefully.
I’m still improving the product and would love feedback on what feels useful, confusing, or missing.
