Some TypeScript tricks

This might not be something so special, but I bet not everyone knows.

Running *.ts files directly

Use ts-node instead of node, and ts-node-dev instead of nodemon.

Cannot run ts-node due to import syntaxes? No problemo, try this

ts-node -O '{"module": "commonjs"}' scripts/example.ts
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

I do not recommend you use ts-node in production.

tsconfig.json, linting, declaration map and more

You should create tsconfig.json with tsc --init.

After that, you should see

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    /* Basic Options */
    // "incremental": true, /* Enable incremental compilation */

Different settings are for Web browsers and Node.js

For web browsers,

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "target": "es5",
    "module": "esnext",
    "declaration": true, /* Generates corresponding '.d.ts' file. */
    "declarationMap": true, /* Generates a sourcemap for each corresponding '.d.ts' file. */
    "sourceMap": true, /* Generates corresponding '.map' file. */
    "outDir": "./dist",
    "rootDir": "./src"
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

For Node.js,

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "target": "esnext",
    "module": "commonjs",
    "declaration": true, /* Generates corresponding '.d.ts' file. */
    "declarationMap": true, /* Generates a sourcemap for each corresponding '.d.ts' file. */
    "sourceMap": true, /* Generates corresponding '.map' file. */
    "outDir": "./lib",
    "rootDir": "./src"
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

For linting,

  • Some ESLint rules are quite problematic. You should use tsconfig.json's instead.
// .eslintrc.js

{
  rules: {
    'no-unused-vars': 0,
    'no-useless-constructor': 0
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
// tsconfig.json

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    /* Strict Type-Checking Options */
    "strict": true, /* Enable all strict type-checking options. */
    "noImplicitAny": true, /* Raise error on expressions and declarations with an implied 'any' type. */
    "strictNullChecks": true, /* Enable strict null checks. */
    "strictFunctionTypes": true, /* Enable strict checking of function types. */
    "strictBindCallApply": true, /* Enable strict 'bind', 'call', and 'apply' methods on functions. */
    "strictPropertyInitialization": true, /* Enable strict checking of property initialization in classes. */
    "noImplicitThis": true, /* Raise error on 'this' expressions with an implied 'any' type. */
    "alwaysStrict": true, /* Parse in strict mode and emit "use strict" for each source file. */

    /* Additional Checks */
    "noUnusedLocals": true, /* Report errors on unused locals. */
    "noUnusedParameters": true, /* Report errors on unused parameters. */
    "noImplicitReturns": true, /* Report error when not all code paths in function return a value. */
    "noFallthroughCasesInSwitch": true, /* Report errors for fallthrough cases in switch statement. */

    /* Advanced Options */
    "forceConsistentCasingInFileNames": true /* Disallow inconsistently-cased references to the same file. */
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

BTW, I currently recommend this .eslintignore.

*.*
!*.ts
!*.js
!*.tsx
!*.jsx
!*.vue
node_modules
dist
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Compiling TypeScript to JavaScript

Other than using Rollup, Webpack, Parcel or something else, you can also just run,

tsc
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

For web browsers, if you enable "module": "esnext" in tsconfig.json, you can relative import as well, using <script type="module">, although you will need to go extra mile, as this is not Babel.

Or, just use Snowpack.

Pacharapol, you've just saved my day with the

ts-node -O

trick. Thanks.

A favor. Could you elaborate on why you recommend this:

```BTW, I currently recommend this .eslintignore.
.
!.ts
!
.js
!.tsx
!
.jsx
!*.vue
node_modules
dist
Thanks!
My latest thought on this is
``
You can choose to lint .eslintrc.js as well.
