AB-100 Exam Experience: Architecture, Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365, and No Code

I recently passed the Microsoft AB-100 exam as part of the Microsoft Frontier Transformation Engineer journey. 🎉

After previously taking AI-103, I found AB-100 to be a very different type of exam.

While AI-103 is closer to the implementation and development side of building AI solutions, AB-100 is strongly focused on:

  • Solution architecture
  • Business requirements
  • Technology selection
  • Microsoft Copilot Studio
  • Dynamics 365
  • Choosing the right Microsoft technology for each scenario

Here are my main takeaways.

AB-100 Is an Architecture-Oriented Exam

The most important thing to understand is that AB-100 is not a coding exam.

I did not encounter any code-oriented questions.

Instead, the exam focuses on your ability to analyse a business scenario and determine how a solution should be designed.

The questions are closer to:

  • Which Microsoft technology should the organisation use?
  • When should a company choose one platform instead of another?
  • How should different services and products be combined?
  • Which solution best satisfies the business and technical requirements?
  • What are the architectural consequences of each decision?

Memorising individual product features is not enough.

You need to understand how the different Microsoft technologies fit together, where they overlap, and why one option is more appropriate than another under specific circumstances.

Dynamics 365 Knowledge Is Important

A good understanding of Dynamics 365 is important for this exam.

You do not necessarily need to be a specialist in every Dynamics 365 product, but you should understand the role of the platform within a broader business solution.

You should be comfortable identifying situations where Dynamics 365 is a better choice than:

  • Building a custom application
  • Using only Power Apps
  • Using standalone Azure services
  • Creating a solution entirely from scratch

The exam expects you to reason about complete organisational solutions, not just isolated AI capabilities.

You Need to Understand Microsoft Copilot Studio

Microsoft Copilot Studio is another major area.

You should understand:

  • What Copilot Studio is designed for
  • How it can be extended
  • When it is the right choice for an organisation
  • How it integrates with organisational data
  • How it relates to Power Platform
  • How it works alongside Dynamics 365, Microsoft 365, and Azure services

The exam is less interested in whether you remember where a particular button is located.

It is much more interested in whether you can determine when Copilot Studio belongs in the proposed architecture.

Technology Selection Matters More Than Implementation

A recurring theme throughout the exam is choosing the right technology for the situation.

Several options may appear technically possible, but only one will properly satisfy the requirements, constraints, governance model, existing ecosystem, or expected level of customisation.

You should be able to reason about when an organisation should use:

  • Microsoft Copilot Studio
  • Dynamics 365
  • Power Apps
  • Power Automate
  • Microsoft 365 capabilities
  • Azure AI services
  • Azure OpenAI
  • Custom application development

The goal is not simply to select the most powerful technology.

The goal is to select the most appropriate technology.

That distinction is central to AB-100.

There Were No Code-Oriented Questions

Unlike AI-103, I did not encounter questions involving code.

The exam is much more focused on:

  • Architecture decisions
  • Product selection
  • Business requirements
  • Governance
  • Integration
  • Solution design
  • Organisational transformation

This makes AB-100 particularly relevant for people interested in:

  • Solution architecture
  • Technical leadership
  • Consultancy
  • Technology strategy
  • Business transformation

The Available Time Was More Than Enough

Compared with AI-103, I found the available time for AB-100 to be more than sufficient.

The questions still require careful reading because the details of each scenario matter.

However, I did not feel the same level of time pressure that I experienced with AI-103.

There was enough time to:

  1. Read the scenarios carefully
  2. Compare the available options
  3. Review uncertain answers
  4. Revisit questions before submitting the exam

Naturally, this may vary between candidates, but time management was not a major concern in my experience.

Microsoft Learn Was Not Particularly Helpful During the Exam

One of my more critical observations is that Microsoft Learn was not especially useful during this type of exam.

For questions involving isolated facts, documentation can help confirm a product feature or limitation.

AB-100, however, contains many scenario-based questions where the real challenge is interpreting the situation and selecting the best architecture.

Searching the documentation does not automatically tell you which trade-off is most appropriate.

You need to enter the exam already understanding:

  • The purpose of each platform
  • The overlap between Microsoft technologies
  • The limitations of each option
  • The architectural trade-offs
  • The business situations each technology is designed to address

Microsoft Learn remains useful during preparation, but I would not rely on it as a safety net during the exam.

AB-100 Compared With AI-103

Although both exams belong to the Microsoft Frontier Transformation Engineer journey, they test different skills.

AI-103

AI-103 felt more focused on implementing AI applications and agents using Azure technologies.

It is closer to the engineering side of the journey and requires more familiarity with technical implementation concepts.

AB-100

AB-100 moves further towards solution architecture, consulting, and business transformation.

It tests whether you can look at a company's requirements and propose an appropriate solution using Microsoft's broader ecosystem.

A simple way to describe the difference is:

AI-103 asks whether you understand how AI solutions are built.

AB-100 asks whether you understand what an organisation should build and which technologies it should use.

How I Would Prepare for AB-100

Based on my experience, I would focus on the following areas:

  1. Understand the purpose and boundaries of Dynamics 365.
  2. Learn Microsoft Copilot Studio beyond its basic features.
  3. Understand how Power Platform, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Azure work together.
  4. Practise choosing technologies based on business requirements.
  5. Study architectural trade-offs rather than code.
  6. Understand when custom development is appropriate.
  7. Do not depend too heavily on Microsoft Learn during the exam.

Final Thoughts

AB-100 is a good exam for people interested in solution architecture, technical leadership, consulting, or technology strategy.

The most valuable preparation is not memorising documentation.

It is developing a clear mental model of Microsoft's ecosystem and understanding how the available technologies support different business scenarios.

Overall, I found AB-100 more theoretical and architecture-oriented than AI-103, but also less stressful in terms of time.

With AB-100 completed, that is another milestone reached on the Microsoft Frontier Transformation Engineer journey. 🚀
