We Ditched Kubernetes! Here's Why & What We're Using Now

This is a story (and discussion) about Gitpod.io's journey in and out of Kubernetes.

Kubernetes is an amazing piece of technology, widely used for obvious reasons. But as with many things, it's not the right abstraction/solution for every product or workload. Gitpod provides standardized and automated development environments, and it was built to run on Kubernetes because they thought that's the right abstraction. Over the years they faced different challenges and tried various solutions, and after all that, they decided to move away from k8s.

I invited the CTO of Gitpod, Chris Weichel, to this week's podcast so that we can talk about how they started with Kubernetes and why that felt like the right choice. Some of the topics we cover are:

  • What kind of workload they run
  • Why Kubernetes isn't a great fit for them
  • The challenges they faced as well as the solution they came up with
  • What and how they arrived at their new solution

Here's the recorded version of that conversation 👇🏽
