Gym cancellation rules by state: 24 of 51 have a written-notice-only rule

Which states have a written-notice-only gym cancellation rule?

In 24 of 51 US jurisdictions (50 states plus DC), at least one gym rule requires written notice and names no email, phone or online alternative. That is judged on the gym statute alone. Most of these rules cover cancelling a new contract in a short window after signing, typically 3 business days; they are not a general rule for ending a membership later. The rest of the picture is different too: a state can have a general automatic renewal law that lets you cancel online, and a gym contract can still point you to the mail.

We are the Postbye Team, and we build cancellation-letter guides. The count comes from our automatic renewal laws by state guide, last reviewed October 27, 2026, which reads each state's rule on its official site. Neither the guide nor its gym cancellation rules table marks which 24 jurisdictions they are, so we do not repeat a list here. The guide gives each state's citation and main rule, and the table gives each state's gym rule and how notice must be sent, so you can read your own state.

Four caveats before you rely on it:

  • The guide counts rules, not your contract. Your membership agreement can still name a stricter route.
  • In the gym rules table, the "Cancelling a new contract" column gives the window after signing (typically 3 business days) and "How notice must be sent" gives the method for it. Only a few rows also cover later cancellations: Kentucky (certified mail, return receipt requested, or personal delivery) and New Hampshire (30 days written notice on the month-to-month option). For ending a membership later, read your contract.
  • "Sector only" means a state regulates renewals for some contracts, such as gym memberships, but has no general law.
  • The federal click-to-cancel amendments were vacated by a federal appeals court on July 8, 2025 and are not in force. This is a summary of what the page says, not legal advice.

What do the gym rules in those states actually say?

The wording differs. In the guide's table, Oklahoma gym contracts are cancelled in writing by certified mail or personal delivery. Texas health spa members can cancel for a full refund by certified mail within 3 business days. Mississippi lets gym members cancel in writing within five business days. Ohio, by contrast, accepts mail, email, fax or delivery within 3 business days, so a rule that mentions mail is not the same as a rule that requires it.

Read your own state's row, then read your contract. If either one names writing, send a letter.

What should a gym cancellation letter contain?

Our cancellation letter template lists what the person opening the envelope needs to act without writing back:

  1. Your name and address, exactly as on the account.
  2. Your account or membership number (or the email address on the account if you cannot find one).
  3. A clear sentence that you are cancelling, not pausing.
  4. The date it should end: "as soon as possible" or a specific date.
  5. A request to stop all future charges and remove stored payment details.
  6. A request for written confirmation at your email address.

Sign it, date it and keep a copy. Gyms often want it addressed to a specific place. For many chains that is your home club, not head office, and not every guide carries a mailing address. If a guide lists one, read its label (some are head office addresses marked not for cancellations, as in the example below) and check it against your contract.

Why send a gym cancellation by Certified Mail?

A letter in an ordinary envelope leaves no record. Certified Mail gives you a postmarked mailing receipt and shows when the letter was delivered, or that a delivery attempt was made. Add Return Receipt to get the signature of the person who accepts it. Keep the receipt and tracking number with your copy.

Mind the notice window. Our cancellation letter template page points out that some companies need notice a set number of days before the next billing date, and may count from the day the letter arrives rather than the day you posted it. Our membership cancellation guide says many gym contracts ask for notice in writing and tie cancellation to your home club. For the mechanics of the proof itself, we covered them in an earlier post: how to cancel a subscription by mail and prove it.

How do I look up a gym's cancellation address and notice period?

Our gym cancellation guides list how each chain takes cancellations. Only hand-verified guides carry a notice period, and not all of them do, so treat an empty field as "not on file", not as "none".

To read the same data from code, use Postbye's free read-only MCP server. It is public, needs no key and speaks JSON-RPC over POST to https://postbye.com/mcp. The MCP server page has install steps for Claude, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT. Here is a real tools/call for a large gym chain, run on November 8, 2026. The full result also repeats the answer as plain text in a content array, which we left out.

Request:

curl -s -X POST "https://postbye.com/mcp" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":2,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"get_cancellation_guide","arguments":{"slug":"planet-fitness"}}}'
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Response (trimmed):

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 2,
  "result": {
    "structuredContent": {
      "name": "Planet Fitness",
      "slug": "planet-fitness",
      "category": "Gyms & fitness",
      "how_to_cancel": "Mail (written notice to your home club), in person at your home club, or online (sign in to the member portal on planetfitness.com)",
      "notice_period": "Cancel at least 7 days before the next billing date; same 7 days before the annual fee date",
      "traps": [
        "$58 buyout fee if the membership has a minimum term and ends early",
        "Annual fee bills separately and needs its own 7-day notice",
        ...
      ],
      "verified": true,
      "verified_on": "2026-10-28",
      "letter_goes_to": "Your home club, not head office. ...",
      "mailing_addresses": [
        {
          "label": "Head office (not for cancellations)",
          "lines": ["4 Liberty Ln W", "Hampton, NH 03842"],
          ...
        }
      ],
      ...
    },
    "isError": false
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Read it the way a person would. The notice period is 7 days before the next billing date. Written notice goes to your home club. The only entry in mailing_addresses is head office, and the response itself says it is not for cancellations. If you do not know a company's slug, call search_companies with its name first. The server has four read-only tools in total; the other two are get_cancellation_letter and list_categories.

What is the short version?

Check your state's gym rule in the gym rules table, because 24 of 51 jurisdictions have at least one gym rule that requires written notice and no other option, mostly for the first days after signing. Check your contract for the route that applies later. Write a short letter with the six items above. Send it by Certified Mail with Return Receipt, early enough for the notice period. If you would rather skip the post office, Postbye prints and mails the letter by certified mail and sends you the delivery proof.
