A first remote internship comes with no orientation on the unwritten rules — habits that, done well, make a manager trust you're actually working without needing to check.

The habits that build trust remotely

  • Over-communicate status: a short daily update on what you did, even unprompted, replaces the visibility an office gives for free.
  • Respond within a reasonable window during agreed hours — silence for hours reads as absence, even if you're deep in focused work.
  • Ask questions in the team's shared channel, not only in DMs — it lets others learn from the answer too and shows you're engaged.
  • Turn your camera on for scheduled calls unless told otherwise; it's a small signal that reads as real presence.

The trap to avoid

Going quiet when stuck, hoping to solve it alone before anyone notices, is the single most common way trust erodes remotely. Ask for help sooner than feels comfortable — see how to ask a mentor for help for the exact phrasing that gets a fast, useful answer.
