Again this year, Process Analytics participated in Hacktoberfest 2022 and we’d like to share what we consider to be a great success. This post highlights some contributions the project received, and we compare this year’s results with the results of Hacktoberfest 2021 👀.
We offered the community the opportunity to work on our cornerstone bpmn-visualization TypeScript library, its related examples repository, the project website and the bpmnVisualizationR package.
As part of the event, we updated our famous Hacktoberfest BPMN Diagram with the Hacktoberfest 2022 theme:

But before we talk about the contributions received, if you missed the September news, we have set up a Discord server to more easily discuss topics of interest with the community of the Process Analytics project.
It was very useful during the Hacktoberfest period, so we plan to keep it active indefinitely. Help us keep up the chat with your thoughts and ideas.

Hacktoberfest 2022 results
As always happens, some contributions could not be completed due to lack of contributor’s time, or due to the complexity of a task. That is often the case with Hacktoberfest projects - it’s the way it works!
Nevertheless, we would like to thank all the people who made an effort to contribute 🙏🏻. We warmly invite you to try again, at any time, and we’re more than happy to provide assistance 🙂.
Now, let's talk about the contributions that were accepted.
bpmnVisualizationR package
We had our first external contribution on the bpmnVisualizationR package 🥳
Many thanks to ColinFay, an R specialist, working at ThinkR (Certifications et Formations au langage R).
Colin worked on adding automated tests to this package, and also gave us some tips on good practices 🤩.

Website
Emmanuel Duchastenier’s improvement of the contributing guide will make future contributions easier.
Advocacy
As maintainers, we also had the privilege of contributing by advocating for our project, for Hacktoberfest and for the idea of open source contribution in general 😎.
We organized multiple sessions with Data Science students who have no experience with open source contribution. Multiple students expressed interest and started learning our project domain: process analytics and BPMN.
This was a rewarding experience for us 🥇. In addition to encouraging people to contribute to open source 💪, working with students forced us to speak a non/low-code language and to prepare a getting started tutorial to using our libraries that is easy to follow for any beginner.
