If you have a PTPTN (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional) student loan, you already know the dread of graduation day: not the ceremony, but the realisation that repayment starts in 12 months.
This guide covers everything: when repayments start, how much you owe, how to get the 20% settlement discount, how to apply for deferral, and how to avoid getting blacklisted from passport renewal.
When Does PTPTN Repayment Start?
- Repayment starts 12 months after you graduate (or 12 months after leaving your programme).
- If you are still studying (part-time or continuing to a Masters), repayment is deferred until 12 months after you finish.
- PTPTN will send a repayment notice to your registered address — but do not wait for the letter. Log in to ePPTPN to check your schedule.
How Much Do You Owe Monthly?
Monthly instalment amounts are based on income-based repayment tiers:
| Monthly Gross Income | Monthly Instalment |
|---|---|
| Below RM1,000 | Exempt |
| RM1,000 - RM1,999 | RM100 |
| RM2,000 - RM2,999 | RM150 |
| RM3,000 - RM3,999 | RM200 |
| RM4,000 - RM4,999 | RM250 |
| RM5,000 and above | RM300 |
Income-based tiers are reviewed periodically. Verify current rates at ptptn.gov.my.
If your income changes, you can apply to revise your instalment amount at any PTPTN counter or via ePPTPN.
How to Pay
PTPN accepts payment via:
- JomPAY — biller code 30093 (search PTPTN in your online banking JomPAY section)
- ePPTPN portal — log in at ptptn.gov.my with your IC number and password
- PTPTN counters — cash, card, or cheque at any PTPTN office
- Pos Malaysia — at the counter, quote your IC number
- Selected banks — Maybank, CIMB, RHB, and others via counter or ATM
- Auto-debit — set up a standing instruction so you never miss a payment
Pro tip: Set up auto-debit. Forgetting a payment can start a chain reaction of late fees, CCRIS listing, and eventually passport blacklisting.
The 20% Settlement Discount
PTPN regularly offers a 20% discount on the outstanding principal if you settle your full loan in one lump sum.
- The discount applies to the principal amount only, not accumulated service charges
- Campaigns typically run for limited periods (often 3-6 months)
- To qualify: settle the full outstanding balance during the campaign period
- Even outside campaign periods, a 5% discount applies for full settlement at any time
If you have savings and your outstanding balance is RM30,000, a 20% discount saves you RM6,000 in one transaction.
What If You Cannot Pay? — Deferral and Exemption
Repayment Deferral
- Apply via ePPTPN or at any PTPTN counter
- Eligible if: unemployed, on unpaid leave, maternity leave, pursuing further studies, or income below the minimum threshold
- Deferral is typically granted for 6 to 12 months and can be renewed
- Service charges continue to accumulate during deferral (PTPTN loans carry a 1% per annum service charge)
Income Exemption
- If your gross monthly income is below RM1,000, you are automatically exempt from repayment
- Apply via ePPTPN with proof of income (payslip or statutory declaration if unemployed)
Consequences of Not Paying — The Blacklist
CCRIS Listing: Missing 3 or more consecutive months will result in your account being listed on CCRIS (Central Credit Reference Information System), managed by Bank Negara. A CCRIS record can affect home loan, car loan, and credit card applications.
Passport Blacklisting: PTPTN has the authority under the PTPTN Act 1997 to request that the Immigration Department restrict your passport renewal.
To have your name removed from the blacklist:
- Pay the outstanding overdue amount in full (or negotiate a repayment arrangement)
- Apply at a PTPTN counter with proof of payment for blacklist removal
- Wait for PTPTN to update the Immigration Department (typically 1-2 weeks)
Checking Your Balance and Status
- ePPTPN portal: ptptn.gov.my — log in with your IC number
- PTPTN hotline: 1-300-88-7878 (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm)
- MyDebt Solusi app: Bank Negara app allows you to check your CCRIS status including PTPTN listing
Pro Tips
- Settle early if you can. The 1% per annum service charge compounds. A RM40,000 loan over 25 years costs significantly more than RM40,000.
- Never ignore PTPTN notices. If you are struggling, call them and negotiate a deferral instead.
- Watch for settlement discount campaigns. PTPTN announces these periodically via their website and social media.
- Keep your registered address updated. Important notices are sent by post.
