We built CursiveLines: learn cursive one letter at a time

Cursive is a skill a lot of adults come back to. They want to help a child with homework, read an old family letter, or sign their name with a little more confidence. The hard part isn't the shape of a letter. It's the movement: where the pen starts, which way it goes, and how one letter reaches into the next. A printed chart shows the finished letter and none of that.

So we built CursiveLines, a free site for learning cursive one line at a time.

What the site does

  • Every letter has numbered strokes and direction arrows, and you can play the strokes back as often as you like.
  • A trace pad lets you follow the model with a finger, mouse or stylus, then check your tracing.
  • You can type up to 500 characters of your own words, in cursive or print, and print them as a practice sheet on A4 or US Letter paper.

What's inside

  • The cursive alphabet from A to Z, capital and small, with a page for each letter that covers its joins and one common mistake.
  • Five cursive styles side by side: Zaner-Bloser, Palmer Method, D'Nealian, Spencerian and Copperplate.
  • The print alphabet, a five-stage course for clearer handwriting, and a photo tool that measures slant, letter size and spacing.
  • A handwritten signature generator that writes your name in any of 382 famous signature styles, with PNG and SVG downloads.

No account and no sign-up.

Who we had in mind

A parent sitting next to a child's cursive homework. An adult whose signature has shrunk to a scribble. A teacher who wants this week's words on a sheet that prints cleanly.

A note on how it's built

It's one Next.js site on Vercel. Each letter is a set of hand-placed pen paths, not a font, which is what makes stroke numbers, direction arrows and playback possible. The printable sheets are drawn from the same letter paths as the lessons, so what you practice on screen matches what comes out of the printer.

What's next

More practice sets, more letter lessons and clearer help with the joins that trip people up. Tell us in the comments which letter gives you the most trouble.

Start with your own name at CursiveLines.
