After spending 3 months tracking every Manus AI task I ran — over 3,200 tasks across web development, data analysis, research, and automation — I discovered something that changed how I use the platform entirely.

The Methodology
I built a simple logging system: every task got tagged with credits consumed, task type (dev/research/data/automation), complexity (1-5), whether it succeeded on first try, and what optimization I applied. I tracked this in a spreadsheet for 94 days. Here's what the numbers revealed.
Pattern #1: The "Kitchen Sink" Prompt (31.2% of waste)
This is the biggest offender. When you dump everything into a single prompt — context, instructions, examples, constraints — Manus spins up maximum resources trying to parse it all.
What I found:
- Average cost of a kitchen-sink prompt: 831 credits
- Same task broken into 2-3 focused prompts: 427 credits
- Savings: 49%
The fix: Structure your prompts with clear sections. Give context first, then instructions. If you have multiple sub-tasks, break them into separate Manus tasks.

Pattern #2: The "Retry Loop" (23.8% of waste)
When a task fails or produces mediocre output, most people just re-run the exact same prompt. The AI often makes the same mistakes, burning credits each time.
What I found:
- Average retries before success: 2.7 attempts
- Credits wasted on failed retries: ~1,100 per complex task
- With diagnostic prompt first: 1.4 attempts average
The fix: Before retrying, run a quick diagnostic. Ask Manus to analyze what went wrong. Then adjust your prompt based on the diagnosis. This alone saved me ~24% of my monthly spend.
Pattern #3: Wrong Model Routing (17.4% of waste)
Not every task needs the most powerful model. Simple formatting, basic code fixes, and straightforward questions can run on Standard mode. But by default, many users let Manus auto-select, which often overshoots.
What I found:
- Tasks that could run on Standard but used Max: 38% of all tasks
- Average cost difference: 2.8x more expensive
- Quality difference for simple tasks: negligible
The fix: Explicitly specify when a task is simple. Use phrases like "this is a quick fix" or "simple formatting task" to help the routing algorithm choose appropriately.
The Combined Impact
When I applied all three fixes systematically over 94 days:

Limitations
This analysis has clear limitations. It's one user (me), with my specific usage patterns (heavy on web development and automation). Your mileage will vary. The 72.4% figure is from my data — your top waste patterns might be different. I also can't verify exact credit costs since Manus doesn't provide granular billing, so my "credits consumed" metric is based on the credit counter before/after each task.
The Uncomfortable Truth
Manus is an incredible tool, but the credit system is opaque. There's no cost preview, no usage breakdown by task type, and no way to know if you're overpaying until the credits are gone.
This frustration is what led me to build a tool to automate the fixes above.
