your ai agent said done. here's how to prove it.
you tell your agent to do something. it says done. you look at the output. looks fine. you ship it to the client. a week later the client says it never worked right, and you have nothing. no proof of what the agent actually did. no record you can check. just a chat transcript where the agent said "done."
this is the ai agent delivery proof problem, and almost everyone running agents in production is ignoring it.
a chat transcript is not delivery proof. logs are not delivery proof. a screenshot is not delivery proof. all of them can be edited, faked, or selectively presented after the fact. if you cannot independently verify the record, you do not have proof. you have a story.
what delivery proof actually requires
for a record to count as proof your ai agent did the job, it needs three properties.
first, captured at execution. the record has to be created by the execution layer at the moment the work runs, not reconstructed later.
second, tamper-evident. each record must be cryptographically bound to its contents. hash chaining: record n contains the hash of record n-1, so editing an old record breaks every record after it.
third, verifiable by a third party. someone who was not in the room must be able to check the record and confirm it is intact.
a verifiable receipt is the unit that has all three properties. it records one piece of work: what ran, what the inputs were, what the result was, when it happened, and a hash chain link.
what a receipt proves, exactly
a verifiable receipt proves the saved result was not changed since it was saved. that is it. it does not prove the answer was correct. it does not prove an event in the real world happened. it proves the record you are looking at is the same record the execution layer wrote.
the format
aer-1 is an open internet-draft: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-zambo-aer1/15/
it is a draft, not a finalized standard. implementations exist in multiple languages.
real use cases
freelancer delivery: hand over verifiable receipts for every deliverable. client checks at https://zambo.dev/verify/
agent handoffs: agent b verifies agent a's receipts before proceeding. if a receipt fails, the workflow stops.
client proof: "here is the work, here is the proof it was not altered, check it yourself."
