If your editor is Vim, Neovim, or Emacs, most "AI coding tool" roundups aren't written for you — they assume a GUI, a sidebar panel, an extension marketplace. The tools that actually fit a terminal-first workflow are a smaller list, and they split into two genuinely different categories rather than one ranked list.
Agents that live in the terminal, not bolted onto one:
- Claude Code is terminal-native by design — not a plugin ported into a shell, a CLI agent from the start. It reads your whole repo, runs commands, edits files, and works the same way whether your editor is Neovim, Emacs, or nothing at all. $20/mo via the Pro plan, with Max tiers above that for heavier usage.
- Aider is the open-source alternative to that model: terminal-based pair programming with unusually tight git integration (it commits as it goes, with real diffs you review before they land) and the ability to point it at whatever LLM you want to pay for instead of one vendor's model. Free, BYO API key.
Completion that happens to work without a GUI too:
- GitHub Copilot's free tier is the easiest on-ramp if you just want inline suggestions and don't need an agent driving your shell — limited, but genuinely free, and it works through editor integrations that don't require a heavyweight IDE.
Worth a look if you're flexible on editor:
- Zed is a Rust-native, open-source editor built around ACP (Agent Client Protocol) — instead of shipping its own AI, it lets you plug Claude Code, Codex, or other CLI agents directly into the editor. If you want terminal-agent power with actual editor ergonomics around it, this is the bridge between the two categories above.
- Cline (VS Code) adds Plan/Act modes and real terminal execution with MCP support — free and open source, if VS Code is tolerable to you.
The honest takeaway: terminal-first developers aren't choosing between these the way GUI users choose between IDEs. Claude Code or Aider for the agent doing the work, Copilot's free tier if you just want completions, Zed if you want an editor that treats terminal agents as first-class citizens instead of an afterthought.
