We run a head-to-head comparison of Claude Code and Cline — six months of daily use across a TypeScript monorepo, a Python ML pipeline, and a Go backend, hundreds of real tasks. Going back to correct a different tool's pricing page this week, we re-read our own Pricing section on this comparison and found it wrong on both sides, in opposite directions.
Claude Code: we made it sound more expensive and less accessible than it is.
The page says: "Billed through Anthropic API usage. No subscription — you pay per token. Heavy usage typically costs $150-400/month." That's true only if you use the API directly. It skips the route most people actually use: Claude Code comes included with a Claude Pro subscription ($20/month) or Claude Max ($100/month for 5x usage, $200/month for 20x). Telling a reader "no subscription, budget $150-400/month" when $20/month gets them in the door is a real omission, not a rounding error.
Cline: we made it sound purely free when it no longer is.
The page says: "Cline itself is free and open-source. You pay only for API tokens from your chosen provider." Since June 29, 2026, Cline has also sold ClinePass — a $9.99/month subscription for discounted usage on a set of open-weight models (GLM 5.2, Kimi K2.7 Code, DeepSeek V4 Pro, MiniMax-M3, Qwen3.7). We caught this same gap on our dedicated Cline pricing page yesterday and are fixing it here too, since it's the same underlying fact. Cline is still free and open-source at its core — BYOK still works exactly as described — but "you pay only for API tokens" is no longer the complete picture.
What held up: the parts of the comparison that aren't pricing. Claude Code's deeper, wider file exploration produces more coherent results on complex, multi-file changes — we saw this directly implementing a WebSocket notification system that required reading the existing HTTP middleware, auth layer, database models, and event system before writing a line, and it worked first try. Cline's VS Code integration, step-by-step approval flow, and any-model flexibility are real, distinct advantages that don't depend on pricing at all. The comparison's bottom line — Claude Code for maximum quality, Cline for maximum accessibility — doesn't change.
We also caught the page naming "Claude 3.5 Sonnet" as a Cline backend option in a few places. That's a specific older model version; Anthropic's current Claude model lineup has moved on since this was written, so treat those mentions as dated rather than current.
We're correcting the source comparison to state both pricing structures accurately: Claude Code via Pro ($20/mo) / Max ($100-200/mo) / API pay-per-token, and Cline via free-BYOK / ClinePass ($9.99/mo).
No confirmed affiliate relationship with Cline; standard disclosure applies to any Claude Code links.
