Why I Built a Privacy-First Video Transcription Tool (And Why Big Tech Hates It)

Here's a question nobody in Silicon Valley wants you to ask:

Why does your transcription service need to track your behavior?

Seriously. You upload a video. You get text back. That's the transaction. So why does every major platform need analytics cookies, behavioral tracking, device fingerprinting, and a 47-page privacy policy to convert speech to text?

Because you're not the customer. You're the product.

The Privacy Problem Nobody Talks About

Every time you upload a video to a major transcription service, here's what actually happens:

  1. Your audio gets processed on their servers
  2. Your content gets analyzed for ad targeting
  3. Your usage patterns get sold to data brokers
  4. Your "private" meetings end up training their AI models

Read the fine print. I'll wait.

Otter.ai, Rev, Descript — they all do some version of this. It's not a bug. It's the business model.

So I Built ClawGrab

ClawGrab is a video transcription tool that does one thing right: it respects your privacy.

  • Zero analytics cookies
  • Zero behavioral tracking
  • GDPR compliant by design, not by legal patch
  • No training on your data. Period.

You upload. You get your transcript. That's it. No dark patterns. No upsell popups. No "we updated our privacy policy" emails every quarter because we keep finding new ways to monetize your data.

The Price Gap Is Criminal

Otter.ai Pro: $16.99/month (and they still track you)
Rev: $0.25/minute (a 60-min video costs $15 PER VIDEO)
Descript: $24/month
Enterprise transcription: $200+/month

ClawGrab: $12/month. Unlimited. Private.

I'm not subsidizing the price with your data. The price IS the price because I built it lean — Flask backend, Groq Whisper for STT, no bloated infrastructure, no army of product managers figuring out how to make the "decline cookies" button harder to find.

Who Needs This

  • Content creators who don't want their unreleased videos analyzed
  • Lawyers transcribing privileged conversations
  • Journalists protecting sources
  • Anyone who's sick of being the product
  • Small businesses that can't afford enterprise pricing OR enterprise data exposure

The Stack

Flask + Supabase for auth. Groq Whisper API for speech-to-text (fast and accurate). Stripe for billing. Deployed on Render.

No Google Analytics. No Hotjar. No Mixpanel. No Segment. No Facebook Pixel. I don't even know how many people visit the site on Tuesdays, and I sleep fine.

The Point

Privacy isn't a feature. It's a right. And the fact that we've been conditioned to accept surveillance as the cost of using software is insane.

ClawGrab exists because at least one transcription tool should treat your data like it's yours.
