Everyone says you need a powerful GPU and tons of RAM to run local LLMs. I decided to challenge that idea.
So I took my ancient 2010 Windows 7 machine (dual-core CPU, 3.8GB usable RAM, no GPU) and turned it into a fully functional offline AI workstation using KoboldCPP and Qwen 2.5 0.5B (Q4_K_M).
The result? A working local AI that runs at ~2.2 tokens per second, stays under 3GB RAM, and delivers surprisingly useful responses for writing, brainstorming, coding help, and more.
Itβs not the smartest model in the world, but itβs completely private, works offline, and proves you donβt need expensive new hardware to join the local AI revolution.
If you have an old PC gathering dust, this might be the most fun project you try this year.

Would love to hear what old hardware youβre still using!
