Hacktoberfest is the best thing that can ever happen to anyone. It introduced me to Open Source.
The Hacktoberfest is a yearly fest done to introduce the new commerce with the open source platform. Similarly it happened with me this year. You needn't any expertise in any one domain to get started and contribute to other repositories. It's just finding your interest , have a basic idea of that interest and you are good to go. If you encounter anything which is new to you, learn it at that time only. And the best part is , with just 4 pull requests, you get those amazing swags. Everyone must try it once.
