Why your first AI hire is different from your first backend hire When you hired your first backend engineer, the interview loop mostly worked. You could look at a pull request and tell whether the code was sound. The candidate's previous employer had probably shipped something similar to what you needed. And the failure modes of a bad hire were visible within weeks: broken builds, missed deadlines, brittle APIs. AI engineering breaks all three of those assumptions.
