ChatGPT: Why Your Answers Get Worse in a Long Chat (and When to Start a New One)

Long chats quietly cost you accuracy. Say you are quoting a customer and change the numbers three times. By the fortieth message, the chat still holds the old prices, and the answer can mix them up. Nobody notices until a wrong number reaches a client.

The fix is not a new tool. It is knowing when to keep going and when to start over.

Keep the same chat when

  • You are still working on the same task with the same facts.
  • You want one small change, like a shorter paragraph or a friendlier tone.

Start a new chat when

  • The topic changes, for example from one customer to the next.
  • Answers start to repeat, contradict an earlier answer, or forget a fact you gave.

How to start clean

  1. Ask for a recap: "Summarize the facts we agreed on in five bullet points. Only include what I said."
  2. Check the recap. Fix any wrong number yourself.
  3. Open a new chat, paste the recap at the top, then add your new request.

Check the numbers yourself

Models find facts well and do arithmetic less reliably. Add up any total you plan to send, even when the chat looks right.
