I built a website that anyone can take over, and an AI rebuilds it from their prompt

Last night I shipped a weird little experiment: hijackthe.site.

The rules are simple. You pay $1, write a prompt, and an AI regenerates the entire site into whatever you described. The next person pays $2 and replaces you. Then $3, $4, and so on.

Nothing gets deleted. Every takeover is stored as a numbered version, so there's a public history and a timelapse of everything the site has been.

A few things I found fun to build

  • Immutable versions. Each hijack is saved as its own version (/v/{n}, /site/{n}), so the history and timelapse just replay them.
  • Per-version share images. Every version gets its own OG image, so a shared link shows whatever the site currently is.
  • A tiny public state endpoint. /api/state returns the current price, owner and how many people are on the page.

Update: the first hijack happened

A few hours after launch, someone named CB paid $1 and turned my entire site into a landing page for their startup, Howly.io (a HubSpot visualizer). Honestly the smartest $1 ad buy I've seen. Now it costs $2 to take it from them, and their version stays in the history forever.

The parts I'm still thinking about: how to sandbox AI-generated pages safely, and whether it's better to moderate the prompt before generating or the output after. If you've dealt with either, I'd love to hear how you'd do it.

And if you take it over, I want to see what you turn it into.
