💰 How I Made My First $100 With a Directory

Making your first $100 online feels harder than it should.
Not because it’s technically difficult…
but because most people overcomplicate everything.
They build too much.
Wait too long.
And try to be perfect.
I took a different approach.
Instead of building a complex SaaS, I launched a simple directory.
Here’s exactly how I made my first $100 with it.

⚠️ Why I Chose a Directory
At first, I was thinking about building a “real SaaS product.”
Something bigger.
But then I realized:
👉 I don’t need something big
👉 I need something that can make money fast
Directories checked all the boxes:
simple
easy to understand
clear monetization
So I went with that.

🧠 Step 1 — Picking the Right Niche

I didn’t try to build a general directory.
That’s a mistake.
Instead, I focused on a niche where:
new tools appear frequently
people actively search for solutions
AI tools were perfect for that.
Constant growth.
Constant demand.

⚙️ Step 2 — Not Building From Scratch

This was the biggest time saver.
Instead of coding everything:

  • submissions
  • admin panel
  • SEO
  • monetization I started from a working base. Something like Dirly, which already includes all of these features. This allowed me to: 👉 skip weeks of development 👉 focus on launching

🏗 Step 3 — Setting Up the Directory

I kept it simple:
Clean homepage
Clear categories
First batch of tools (manually added)
No fancy design.
No complex features.
Just something usable.

📦 Step 4 — Adding Initial Content

Before launching, I added around 50–70 tools manually.
Why?
Because empty directories don’t work.
This gave:
immediate value
better first impression
SEO foundation

📣 Step 5 — Getting the First Traffic

I didn’t wait for “organic growth”.
I actively shared it:
Posted on X
Reached out to founders
Shared in communities
Simple message:
👉 “I’m building a directory for this niche”
That alone brought the first visitors.

💳 Step 6 — The First Monetization Attempt

I didn’t wait for thousands of users.
I added a simple offer:
👉 Featured listing
Then I reached out to tool creators and said:
“Hey, I’m building a directory in this niche.
I can feature your tool at the top.”
That’s it.
No complex pitch.

💰 Step 7 — The First $100

A few people ignored it.
Some said “maybe later.”
But a couple said yes.
That was enough.
👉 First payments came in
👉 Total hit $100

Not huge.
But important.
Because it proved:
👉 the model works

🔁 What I Learned

The biggest lessons:

  1. You don’t need traffic to start monetizing
    Even small visibility is enough.

  2. Simple offers work
Featured listings are easy to understand.

  3. Speed matters more than perfection
    Launching early made everything possible.

  4. Distribution beats building
Traffic came from effort, not SEO (at first).

🚀 What I’d Do Differently

If I started again:
I’d monetize even earlier
I’d reach out to more founders
I’d focus on a niche even faster
But overall, the approach works.

🔥 The Real Insight

You don’t need:
a complex SaaS
a big audience
months of work
You need:
👉 a simple product
👉 a clear monetization method
👉 fast execution

💡 Why Directories Still Work
Because they combine:

  • content
  • traffic
  • monetization
  • In one simple model. And when built right: 👉 they scale over time

🧠 Final Thought

Making your first $100 is not about building something perfect.
It’s about proving something works.
Once you do that…
Everything changes.

💬 Closing

If you had to make your first $100 with a simple product…
what would you build?
