From Zero to AI Agents: A Free, Structured Learning Path on Microsoft Learn

Artificial intelligence is the most in-demand skill area right now, yet most beginners stall at the same point: not a lack of material, but a lack of direction. Microsoft Learn offers hundreds of free modules on AI. Without an order, it's easy to jump into agents before understanding prompts, or into Azure services before understanding machine learning.

To solve this, I curated a single learning plan that moves in the order skills naturally build.

What the plan covers

  1. Prompting with Copilot. Write clear, reusable prompts for Microsoft 365 Copilot and generative AI tools.

  2. Core AI concepts. Understand what AI and machine learning are and how models learn.

  3. Responsible AI. Learn the principles and tools behind safe, fair AI, including content safety in Microsoft Foundry.

  4. Azure AI services. Explore machine learning, natural language processing, speech, computer vision, and information extraction.

  5. Generative AI. Learn how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) works and build a chat app with Microsoft Foundry.

  6. AI agents. Plan, create, and extend agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio, from a first agent to multi-agent solutions.

  7. Certification prep. Prepare for the AI-901 Azure AI Fundamentals exam.

Why this order works

The plan follows a simple progression: use AI, understand it, apply it responsibly, then build with it. Early sections deliver quick wins, so learners gain confidence before the hands-on building begins. Every section ends with something you can do, not just something you've read.

Time and format
Free and self-paced
Roughly four weeks at about two sections per week
Mix of short modules and hands-on labs
A Microsoft Learn plan badge on completion, visible in your profile under Achievements

One clarification: Microsoft Learn awards badges for plans, not certificates. The only official credential is a Microsoft Certification, which requires passing an exam. That is why the final section prepares you for AI-901.

Who it's for

Students, career changers, and developers who want a clear starting point. No prior AI experience is required.

If you try it, I'd welcome feedback on pacing and module order so I can keep improving it.
