Reviewing Smart Home Gear Is Harder Than You Think — Here's How We Do It

Smart home reviews have a dirty secret: most reviewers test devices in isolation. But smart home devices don't exist in isolation — they exist in ecosystems.

Smart Home Gear Reviews tests every device within a full smart home stack.

The Ecosystem Problem

A smart bulb review is meaningless without knowing:

  • Does it work with your hub? (Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi, Thread, Matter)
  • How does it handle automations? (response time, reliability)
  • Does it play nice with other brands?
  • What happens when your internet goes down?

We test every device against multiple ecosystems: Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

What We Cover

  • Smart lighting — bulbs, switches, strips, outdoor
  • Security — cameras, locks, sensors, alarms
  • Climate — thermostats, fans, air quality monitors
  • Entertainment — speakers, displays, media controllers
  • Networking — mesh routers, range extenders, PoE switches

Our Rating System

We rate on five axes:

  1. Setup difficulty — how long from unboxing to working
  2. Reliability — does it stay connected? Does it respond consistently?
  3. Ecosystem compatibility — how many platforms does it support?
  4. Automation potential — can it do useful things automatically?
  5. Value — performance relative to price

The Real Test

Every device lives in our test home for at least 60 days. We run automations, stress-test connectivity, simulate power outages, and measure actual energy consumption.
