Mobile development has become ubiquitous. Mobile development is now an essential component of the software business, with an ever-increasing variety of platforms and architectural patterns emerging to address the different demands of developers and users.

Let's examine the key mobile development platforms in addition to some of the most frequent software architectural patterns employed, and consider the pros and cons of each.

MOBILE DEVELOMENT PLATFORMS

Native Development

Native development refers to developing mobile apps for a specific platform, such as iOS or Android. Native programming uses language and tools that are particular to the platform. iOS development requires Swift or Objective-C with Xcode, while Android development requires Kotlin or Java with Android Studio.

Pros:

Performance: Native apps often offer superior performance and responsiveness. Native apps are built specifically for a particular operating system and as such can interact easily with the device’s features and hardware ensuring faster execution and efficiency.

User experience: Ability to deliver a personalized user experience while maintaining a uniform platform appearance and feel. Native apps are designed to align with specific guidelines and conventions of the operating system, allowing a seamless integration and overall feel of the platform.

Cons:

Development cost: Using separate codebases for multiple platforms increases development time and expense. Writing, testing and updating code individually for reach platform increased development time and cost.

Skill requirement: Native development requires proficiency with multiple programming languages and development environments. iOS development requires Swift or Objective-C with Xcode IDE while Android development requires Java or Kotlin and the Android Studio IDE.

Cross-Platform Development

Cross-platform development enables developers to build code once and then release it across different platforms. Popular frameworks are React Native and Flutter.

Pros

Cost-Effective: A single codebase minimizes development time and costs. Cross-platform development eliminates the need to maintain separate codebases for each platform, hence reducing both development time and costs.

Reusability: Cross-platforms development ensures reuse of code across platforms enhances productivity. This simplifies the coding process and boosts project timelines.

COMMON SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE PATTERNS IN MOBILE DEVELOPMENT

Model-View-Controller (MVC) is a software design pattern used for developing user interfaces that divides the related program logic into three main components: Model, View and Controller.

The model layer manages the application's data logic, storing and retrieving data from back-end data repositories.

The View layer offers the UI essential to interact with the program.

The Controller layer includes the application logic required to permit communication throughout the program.

Pros

Testability: MVC allows for developers to write unit tests for the Model and Controller components with ease by separating the concerns which allows developers to isolate and test each component independently.

Reusability: MVC guarantees that components, such as models and views, can be reused across the entire application.

Cons

Complexity: MVC design may be challenging to manage, particularly in large-scale systems. As the program expands, scalability becomes increasingly important. MVC's architecture requires more careful preparation to guarantee that new modifications may be implemented without causing unforeseen consequences.

Tight coupling: The MVC design may result in strong connectivity between components. Components in MVC architecture may be overly dependent on one another. For example, the view may require knowledge of the model's details, or the controller may need to change the view.

Redux

Redux is a state container mostly used with React native applications. Redux holds the application’s state and logic to enable powerful capabilities like state persistence. Redux is very compatible with any UI later due to its flexibility. Debugging in redux is much easier with the help of Redux DevTools.

Pros

Predictable state management: Centralized state management ensures the application’s state is stored in a single location thereby simplifying tracking and managing of state across different components and features.

Scalability: Redux is suitable for complex applications with extensive state management needs. Redux provides a state container which ensures the state flow is manageable even in complex applications.

Cons

Requires a different learning curve. Redux might pose a deeper learning curve for developers new to state management models. Beginners might find Redux challenging due to the need to understand new concepts.
