AI is making contribution cheaper.

That sounds like a good thing, and in many ways it is.

But open source has never only been about producing code. It has also been about how people learn, collaborate, build trust, become maintainers and eventually shape projects themselves.

With agents now able to inspect repositories, fix issues, write tests and prepare PRs, I’ve been thinking about what happens to that second part.

Especially now that Hacktoberfest has started and PRs no longer count towards rewards.

Back in 2023, I was invited to the Open Source Congress in Geneva, where one of the conversations was:

Does AI Change Everything?

Three years later, I think the question has moved.

What does AI mean for open source itself?
