Need Career Guidance After Leaving My First Job – Feeling Lost

Hi everyone,

I really need some career advice because I feel completely stuck.

I started my career at Accenture. After joining a project, I was assigned the role of Business Analyst in the Banking domain. Unfortunately, things became very difficult for me.

One of my biggest weaknesses has always been English speaking. While I can read and write reasonably well, I struggle with spoken English and expressing my thoughts confidently. Since the Business Analyst role required constant communication with clients and team members, I found it very challenging.

To make things harder, I was working on FullKeys in a new banking project. Neither I nor my senior had much knowledge because the project was new. Whenever banking-related issues came up, I didn't know how to resolve them, and there wasn't much guidance available. Over time, I became frustrated, lost confidence, and eventually resigned.

It has now been four months, and I haven't received many interview calls. I interviewed with TCS and Infosys, but I struggled because of my spoken English. To be honest, my experience at Accenture made me lose a lot of confidence in speaking English. My family is also worried about my career.

Recently, I started learning Data Science. Before that, I had been studying Backend Development.

I would really appreciate some guidance:

Should I continue applying for jobs while improving my skills?

Should I buy any paid courses, or are free resources enough?

What skills are companies currently looking for in freshers or candidates with less than one year of experience?

Should I focus on Backend Development or continue with Data Science?

Should I look for internships? If yes, where can I find genuine internship opportunities?

How can I rebuild my confidence in spoken English while preparing for interviews?

I would be grateful for any advice from people who have gone through a similar situation or who are involved in hiring.

Thank you for reading.

Hey Sarthak. Hope you are well. I am on a similar boat and I hope these answers would help you!

Should I continue applying for jobs while improving my skills?

Yes! If anything, that is the recommended route.

Should I buy any paid courses, or are free resources enough?

Free resources are enough in my opinion. I don't believe in paid courses because it's usually the same throughout. The only way to improve your skills is by actually doing it. For example, If I want to become a full-stack engineer, I would build a full stack project and go from there. Learning by doing, not by simply listening.

What skills are companies currently looking for in freshers or candidates with less than one year of experience?

Depends on what you are doing. I would assume you are doing backend? Regardless, it would be contributions to open source, projects that made an impact, etc. Since you are on dev.to, it is a great opportunity to share your projects and get feedback!

Should I focus on Backend Development or continue with Data Science?

The questions lies "What do you enjoy more?".

Should I look for internships? If yes, where can I find genuine internship opportunities?

Depends on your experience? I would like to see your resume and portfolio if you have it!

How can I rebuild my confidence in spoken English while preparing for interviews?

Keep on practicing. It's the only way to improve your skills. I would recommend finding a person to have a mock interview and practice from there.

Hope this helps! Let me know if anything else :D
