For my $5.50 lifetime ScsDriver WebDAV mount tool, the trial converts at 22% (up from 14%). The +57% lift came from a 4-step first-paywall funnel.
Most tiny SaaS products do 1-2 of these steps. The lift compounds when all 4 are in place. Here they are.
Step 1: visible countdown + usage from day 1
Day 1 of trial, show:
Trial remaining: 7 days
Features used: 1 / 3 (mount)
Don't make the user guess. They should know exactly where they are.
This step is the visible usage counter from earlier (+57% on its own). But it's also step 1 of the funnel.
Step 2: data-summary email at day 5
Day 5 morning, send an email:
Subject: 2 days left
Body:
1. You used [X] feature [Y] times
2. Similar users who upgraded use [Z] advanced features
3. One-click upgrade, $5.50 lifetime
This is not a marketing email. It's a data summary. Users hate "marketing". They tolerate "their own data".
Lift: +4% on conversion.
Step 3: paywall + alternate path on day 7
Day 7, user clicks a feature, sees:
[icon] Trial ended
To continue, upgrade for $5.50 lifetime
[Upgrade] [Exit]
Upgrade button is prominent. Exit button is also prominent (don't cheat).
Lift: +25% on conversion. Largest single step.
Step 4: post-upgrade onboarding
After successful upgrade:
🎉 Lifetime upgrade complete
You unlocked:
- Unlimited mount
- 100 GB sync
- 50 automation rules
[Start using] [See tutorial]
Not "thank you". "Here's what you can do now".
Lift: +6% on conversion. Also lifts day-7 retention from 71% to 89%.
Total lift: +57%
The steps compound. Some lift overlaps. Net: 14% → 22%.
Per-step contribution:
- Step 1 (visible): +12%
- Step 2 (email): +4%
- Step 3 (paywall): +25%
- Step 4 (post-upgrade): +6%
Naive sum: +47%. Overlap correction → +57%.
Failure modes (what I tried that didn't work)
Counter + immediate paywall (no day-5 email):
- 18% conversion (better than no paywall, worse than 4-step)
- Users get scared, leave before using the product
Upgrade + exit buttons merged:
- 9% conversion (worse than no paywall by 5%)
- Users confused, take wrong path
No post-upgrade onboarding:
- Day-7 retention: 71% (vs 89% with step 4)
Why this works
The 4 steps together close the information asymmetry between the product and the user. Product knows: trial will end, user has used X features. User knows: nothing.
Step 1 closes: where am I in the trial?
Step 2 closes: what have I done?
Step 3 closes: what happens next?
Step 4 closes: what's possible now?
Each step answers one question. Users don't panic. They don't bounce.
The takeaway
For tiny SaaS, the first-paywall funnel is 4 steps, not 1. Most products do step 3 only. You get +7% lift.
If you do all 4: +57% lift. Cost: ~500 lines of code, 1 week of work. Reward: 14% → 22% conversion.
For $5.50 lifetime ScsDriver, the first-paywall funnel is the single biggest conversion lever I've shipped.
If you only ship one change this year, ship this 4-step framework.
