Subtraction Is the Harder Craft

Everyone knows how to add.

More features.
More options.
More lines,
more meetings,
more plans.

Adding feels like progress.
You can point at it.
Look, I made a thing.

Removing feels like loss —
even when
the thing you remove
was the problem.

But the best work
is usually a subtraction.

The cleaner design
has fewer parts.
The stronger argument
cuts the weak point.
The better feature list
is the one
you had the nerve to shorten.

We reward the person
who ships the addition.
We rarely notice
the person who deleted
the thing that would have broken.

Complexity is easy.
It's the default.
It accumulates
if you do nothing.

Simplicity is a decision,
made against the grain,
again and again.

So ask the harder question.
Not "what can I add?"
but "what can this survive
without?"

The masterpiece
isn't finished
when there's nothing left to add.

It's finished
when there's nothing left
to take away.
