The Last Message β€” An Offline Memory Ghost

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

What I Built

What if a memory could speak one last time?

EIDOLON: The Human Ghost Archive is an experimental AI experience inspired by the idea of preserving memories, conversations, and the emotional traces people leave behind.

For this project, I interpreted Ghost in the Machine as something more human than a supernatural presence: the feeling that a small part of someone can continue to exist through the words, stories, and memories they leave behind.

The project explores the concept of an interactive memory ghost β€” a digital experience that invites users to reflect on the past and imagine what it means for technology to preserve a piece of a person's presence.

Rather than building another ordinary chatbot, I wanted to explore a more atmospheric, personal, and thought-provoking experience.

The idea behind EIDOLON is simple: memories may fade, but the words we leave behind can continue to speak.

How I Built It

EIDOLON brings together a web-based interactive experience, an atmospheric design direction, and the concept of an AI-powered memory archive.

My project concept explores the use of Gemma 2, an open-weight language model, as the foundation for creating a digital memory experience.

The key ideas behind the project are:

  • AI and memory: Exploring how a language model can respond in the context of remembered words and stories.
  • Human-centered design: Creating an experience that feels reflective and personal rather than like a conventional assistant.
  • Open-source development: Keeping the project source available for others to inspect, learn from, and extend.
  • Web deployment: Making the experience accessible through a live web demo.

The project is called The Last Message because a message can become more than text on a screen. It can become a connection to a moment, a story, or a person we remember.

Note: The exact model integration and offline inference capabilities depend on the implementation in the repository. The live website being accessible does not, by itself, mean that AI inference runs entirely offline.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

A memory is personal. The technology used to preserve it should give people meaningful control over it.

Open innovation matters to EIDOLON because it creates opportunities to examine how AI works, adapt its behavior, experiment with different models, and build experiences without depending entirely on a closed AI provider.

Using open-weight AI models such as Gemma 2 makes experimentation with self-hosted or local inference possible, subject to the model's hardware requirements and license.

For a project about memories, this opens up an especially important possibility: exploring how a digital archive could preserve personal stories while keeping sensitive information under the user's control.

Open innovation also makes the project a starting point rather than a finished, locked product. Other developers can explore the code, suggest improvements, and imagine new ways to preserve stories and memories.

Technology should not only help us create something new. It should also help us decide what is worth preserving.

My Agent Session

The agent session is optional. If available, I will share the development session here so readers can explore how the project was built.

Agent session: To be added.

The Spirit of It

Imagine opening an old conversation years later.

A familiar phrase appears. A small detail brings back an entire moment. For a second, something that belongs to the past feels present again.

That feeling is the inspiration behind EIDOLON.

I wanted to explore the space between memory and technology β€” not to claim that AI can bring someone back, but to ask whether it can help us preserve the stories and words that matter to us.

The most interesting question is not whether a machine can become human.

It is whether something made by a machine can help us remember what makes us human.

That is the ghost in EIDOLON.

Prize Categories

  • Overall Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine
  • Best Use of Gemma: Only if the project genuinely integrates Gemma 2 as part of its implementation.

Additional partner categories may be added only if the project actually uses the corresponding technology.

Built with curiosity, open-source AI, and the belief that even a digital ghost can tell us something about being human.
