How It Works
The tool is built on top of the existing free Word Counter. Three things happen on one page:
- You paste your text into the textarea. Word count, character count, sentences, paragraphs all update instantly.
- The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level appears automatically — that's the US school grade your text reads at. Grade 6 is easy. Grade 12 is high-school level. Grade 16 is college.
- Below the textarea, the AI Rewrite section lets you pick a target grade level from 3 to 16. Click Rewrite. The AI produces a simplified version that preserves your facts but uses shorter sentences and simpler vocabulary.
That pairing matters. Most "AI rewriter" tools rewrite blindly — they don't tell you what you're rewriting from, just give you something different. This one tells you the source grade (so you know if you actually need a rewrite), then lets you pick the destination grade with intent.
Why Target a Specific Reading Grade?
Different audiences read at different levels, and most content overshoots them:
- News articles: Grade 7–9. Most US adults read comfortably at this level.
- Marketing copy: Grade 6–8. The simpler the message, the more people convert.
- Plain-language government documents: Grade 6–8 (a legal requirement in many jurisdictions).
- Technical documentation: Grade 10–12. Acceptable for a technical audience but should drop to Grade 8 if you're explaining the same concept to a general audience.
- Academic writing: Grade 14–16. Appropriate for peer journals; wrong for almost everything else.
When marketers complain about low engagement on long-form content, the cause is usually grade-level mismatch. A piece written at Grade 14 for a Grade 8 audience reads like work, not like reading. Pull the grade level down by 4 points and the same article gets twice the dwell time.

What the AI Text Rewriter Actually Does (and Doesn't)
The AI Rewrite (powered by Google Gemini's gemini-3.1-flash-lite model) is told to:
- Preserve every fact and claim in the original.
- Preserve the author's voice and tone as much as possible.
- Adjust vocabulary and sentence complexity to match the target Flesch-Kincaid grade.
- Output only the rewritten text — no preamble, no explanation, no notes.
What it does NOT do:
- Add new information that wasn't in the original.
- Remove information the original had (it may rephrase, not delete).
- Change the language — English in, English out.
- Fact-check — if your original has an error, the rewrite will too. AI Rewrite is a style tool, not a verification tool.
Privacy: The Important Bit
The tool is honest about where each feature runs:
- Word count, character count, sentences, paragraphs, Flesch-Kincaid grade, keyword density — all run entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device for these features.
- AI Rewrite — your text is sent to Google Gemini for processing. This is the only feature that requires sending data to a server.
The page makes this disclosure inline above the Rewrite button, not buried in a footer FAQ. If you have confidential content (NDAs, internal docs, customer data), use the readability score to spot the problem but don't use AI Rewrite for that text.
Rate Limits and Cost
The feature is free with reasonable per-minute rate limits to prevent abuse (10 requests per minute per IP). Daily quota is shared across all visitors and resets daily — under normal load it comfortably handles individual writers and small teams.
If you need higher volume for a one-off project (rewriting a 50-page document, for example), you can iterate in chunks of 5,000 characters at a time and the rate limits won't be an issue.
